I agree. What I hated most was how the Catholic Church on multiple occasions invaded the middle east at a cost of thousands of lives to compel the people there to adapt a philosophy similar to their own. Appalling.

Catholicism was just the Christian church for over the first half of Christianity. It's still by far the largest Christian denomination.

Why should be people be tolerant of Christianity when Christianity can't be tolerant of itself?

I've always been pretty quiet about the stupid Christians out there who believe all kinds of bullshit are sins without having any biblical evidence. I do this in the name of tolerance of others' faiths.

But I'm starting to feel that the majority of Christians who aren't assholes need to start speaking up, since the vocal minority are making us all look like assholes at the moment.

I think this is the best way to spread the Word -- to show that you can be a Christian and not be a total cunt about it. (Yes, "cunt." Find me any place in the Bible it says not to swear, save using IHVA's name in vain.)

You're right Bang. Swearing is not specifically prohibited in the Bible. However, in my opinion the logical way to look at the Bible is to try to see the intent of the writers. If you read the writings of Peter and Paul there can be little doubt that they call upon Christians to be an example of holiness.

I believe the New Testament teaches Christians to be both an example of holiness and men and women who are relatable to other people. Don't compromise conviction, but don't add lots of burdensome commands.

Swearing is something that most parents try to hide from their children, even in agnostic circles. And while Paul argued strongly against adding burdensome commands to Christianity, he also pointed out that he would avoid doing anything that caused others to sin. I'd say 95% of the world interprets passages like Ephesians above to mean that profanity is not acceptable to God, and I'm pretty sure Paul would respect that if he were with us today.

Read what I wrote again, and you'll see that my use of the word "cunt," taken in context, fits the passage well IMHO.

We are to be examples of holiness indeed, but not hypocritical in that we are all sinners. Non-Christians can see through hypocritical and false holiness, and it, again, makes all Christians look bad.

Be honest. Be true. Question your faith and it will get stronger unless it was weak to start with.

The Pope prayed for peace, especially in Iraq. Good on him.

But he did NOT call the war in Iraq an unjust war.

We are all praying for peace, we all want to bring our troops home safely, and see Iraq rebuild and prosper under a humane, democratic government that will become a beacon of hope for the Middle East.

I'd like to join the Pope in that prayer for peace in the new year.

The Pope is just smart enough to know that now the war's over there is absolutely no reason to call it unjust because it's crying over spilt milk.
