They are part of the lymph system. One of the most vulnerable parts actually. However the lymph system has lots and lots of redundancy so removing part of it is minimal impact. Which is why when and if they get infected severely( and swell up as they get more and more active) they occasionally get removed as breathing >> mildly impared imune system.
