Could be worse. When my bestest friend in the whole wide world was a little kid his teacher found drawings like that and his mother basically kicked him outta ireland and sent him to canada (where he was born during a brief vacation) where he got to bounce around foster homes for a decade until he made the pictures come true:p heh

bet this kid gets to watch sponge bob and eat cookie crisp for a few days and then go to a shrink where he gets to make up graphs and charts and various other garbage that ultimately lets him blackmail his parents a bit.

This is absurd.
In grade school I wrote a series of short stories about a boy who could alter reality with his mind. He often killed other children, and since I was bad at making up names for my characters I used my own schoolmates' names.
Kids are violent. They have violent thoughts. They draw violent pictures and write violent stories. I knew several others in my class who wrote similar stories as I did. I also knew several kids who drew violent pictures.
Now that I think about it, I did that too. I often drew cities being blasted, mushroom cloud in the distance. Or bombed by planes. I drew ghosts, demons, monsters...even zombie angels.
I've grown up to be one of the least violent people I know. I'd never dream of hurting another person.
The boys’ parents said they thought the children should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.
Absolutely correct. They should be punished, because this does depict them specifically harming a classmate. Children need to be taught that violence is not acceptable, unless in a completely ficticious context. But the law certainly didn't need to be brought into this.

If I recall correctly, there was a first grader that brought a gun to school and shot a classmate recently. I can understand why the administrators would be worried about these 5th graders. It seems by that time they would be able to make discerning drawings.

Do we really want our school systems to get further mired down in reactionary politics?

Big difference between a loaded gun and a crayon. Get some perspective.

Seriously with embar on this one. Anybody who thinks that a few drawings translates into a potential for violent outbursts....Completely Missed the 80's.

I actually am going to have to take back my statement. I just remembered drawing pictures and making violent web sites about a band teacher I hated in high school. As much as I would have liked to see him leave, I never would have killed or physically hurt him.
