Should prostitution be legalized?
I'm all for the lagalization of prostitution. But the following article of how that affected socail services in Germany gave me pause.
And then I thought.... Germany has it right. If women don't want the job, then they don't need the benefits.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

[quote="Ddrak"If you agree that prostitution (or any job) is legal then people who refuse the job should be denied unemployment benefits. Dd[/quote]
I don't think that is entirely accurate here in the States. There are lots of unemployed people and lots of low end service jobs open at any given time. If this statement was accurate they could force everyone on unemployment to be dishawashers, maids or retail clerks. We've had several former employees go the full term of unemployment even though there are signs in windows all over this town looking for low end service workers. I employ personel people to deal with this crap so I am just commenting on what I have seen with no real knowledge of the laws involved.
Regarding prosititution, it should be legal.

Legal and regulated like hell. Full health coverage, security, psychological counseling if necessary, and before any guy or girl can go in there to do their thing to the ladies / men of the night, they need to pass a physical too. No sense in spreading around diseases. If you got herpes, get out.
Some people go into prostitution because they have no other choice, but the prostitute has been a part of human society since before Jesus.

Heh heh heh, so we will regulate it out of business before we even legalize it. That's beurocracy in it's prime. =D
Lets make it the best 2 out of 3 psyc exams to get in, oh and the examiners all have to be govmt employees, and of course we need a standards govmt guy to insure all the psyc guys are following the standandards, then we need a lawyer for the mistakes along the way. Of course some exit counseling would be nice, to ensure the experience wasn't harmful to the client or the employee. Gee, we could run the unemployment rolls empty with a little more creative thought here!!!

Re:
Cheap hooker??? NOOOoooOo nononononono.. not once the governement steps in and regulates.. Why being an unlicenced hooker and treding on government regulatory money incomes will land them in trouble waaaaayyy faster than just being an "illeagle" cheap hooker in a government unregulated system.Partha wrote:If all you want is a cheap hooker, use the current system. No charge for any diseases you get.
But it does make one stop and think. Is Germany a conservative or liberal government, I know they have the green party but unsure as what predominates there these days.
I like it though, of course I like sick humor, a country that throws you out in the street if you refuse to sell your body for money. Guess it depends on who is making up the morals or maybe there is no place for morals in government.

Actually... having been laid off last year, I can say that you can turn down any job that's less than 75% of what you were making at your previous job.... maybe prostitution is lucrative.Ddrak wrote:It applies to men as well, but I can follow the reasoning there. Well you can give a woman or a man money freely, you can have sex with a willing partner freely, do the two together and you get arested.
Pros:
1. Less arrests for more prison room for true violent offender.
2. Better over all health for the citizens, slowing the spread of STDs in the population and the like.
3. More tax income into the state/nation, how much money goes to prostitution as is? Imagine being able to tax that and the increase when it is legal.
4. It is legalized in a county in Nevada and in Netherlands, so there is a history to be studdied to show effects of legalization.
5. Creating a new legalized indutry provides more jobs.
6. It will lead to better sex education amongst the population.
Cons:
1. It will lower the value of women in the minds of many men seeing them as nothing more than a sex toy instead of a human bieng. This is already a large enough problem in America as is, it scares me to think how women will be viewed if prostitution ever became legal.
2. More married men will use prostitutes when they are legal (this can be argued that they would use them or cheat even if it was still illegal but that is not the point), this will cause a rise in the divorce rate due to cheating husbands being caught as I am sure you will be documented when you visit one.
3. Birth Control is not 100% effective, even if it is only .001% more there will be a rise in the accidental birth rate so more children will probably be abandoned to adoption agencies.
4. Some prostitutes will not be willing to register as legal, or will produce fake documentation saying they are clean of diseases (this actually happens in the netherlands). Diseases will spread faster amongst the legal prostitute's clientel and therefore amongst the populace that lie about thier disease history.
5. America can stomache seeing people mutilated, beheaded, killed, have body parts hacked off and blood everywhere... but if you show a nipple they freak and spend 2 weeks discussing it on the news. Can they really handle as big a step as legalized sex industry?
I don't like the idea of legalized prostitution, but I am not sure the cons outweigh the pros. Is a happier, healthier, more educated population that brings more money into the country and lowers the unemployment rate worth the increased divorce rate, the degradation of women, and the over all moral issues?
