I could not agree more. Both my younger brother (my parents adopted my oldest sister's middle child) and my nephew have been diagnosed with ADD.Grygonos Thunderwulf wrote:The whole point of this thing is, that I don't think this is an isolated case... I think lots of people use ADHD as a copout for raising their kids, and then pass that copout attitude along to the children.
My parents are abusive and shouldn't be allowed house plants, much less children (letters to the state and welfare do nothing to bring their abuse to a halt or to remove the child) but they medicate him so that he goes to sleep at 6 PM at night and acts like a zombie during the day. He spent a month with Geli and I and we didn't have ONE single problem with him at all, and we didn't give him his medicine. Of course, we didn't beat him or lock him in his room at night with a padlock either.
The same with my nephew. Now my sister is all bent out of shape because the meds have stopped working on her son (he no longer zones out when taking them, what a CHORE). She's having all sorts of tests and brain scans run because she thinks it's wrong for him to run around in the yard whooping like an indian. Of course, she's pushing 250, so she's probably never ran around in the yard before!

I know some people that are legitimately ADD/ADHD. The meds have made a huge difference in their life for the better. One of them was an incredibly bright kid who couldn't pull C's at school -- got on meds and almost instantly went to A work on a consistent basis. There are legitimate cases of this diagnosis and medication being highly worthwhile, and ways of scientifically verifying whether the meds are doing something or just
Then there are the cases that get diagnosed because Mommy and Daddy don't want to admit that there is anything wrong with them/their parenting, and keep on shoping around until someone gives them and answer that excuses them --" its not us, its the disease". Then due to sloppy diagnosis and the profit motive the lousy psychiatrists make their money for an office visit and annother kid gets put on pills.

It's the doctors that are worse. They actually ended up having the kid commited in a mental institute for 4 months. They had him on lithium and he sounded like he was dead.
I decided that it was time to take care of him, regardless of what my family said. I called his shrink, left my name, my number, my relationship to him and that I believe he was being abused, please call me.
Fucker never called back. They released him back to my parents a few weeks later after he "miraclously"<sp> got better.... 4-5 months without being beat would make anyone feel better.

I have been diagnosed with ADD, and fuckin A, it's great, as far as I'm concerned. Never took ritilin or anything else, but I did have plenty of problems in school. The main problem is that, with my mind racing a million miles an hour at all times, I'd already read an entire encyclopaedia set, every book I could get my hands on, and was well above my grade level (with the exception being math... I hate math... Except when crunching money numbers /grin). The problem I had was that school didn't hold my attention at all. I didn't see the point of doing homework for something I understood already, so I didn't do it. I didn't feel that solving for N was going to solve any sort of problem in real life, so I did the bare mininum in math. English, on the otherhand, was different. Here was something I loved, so I threw myself whole-heartedly into it. If a subject or teacher managed to hold my interest, I flew through with As. If not, I got Cs. Granted, some of that was due to my own laziness, and the fact that for some things, I just absolutely did not give a shit.
The main thing to remember with children with "learning disorders" is that most of them are more intelligent than the avg child. Drugging them, forcing them to do certain things, treating them like imbeciles won't work. Figure out what they're good at and work at that with them.
