Bush Nominates Terrorist as Intelligence Czar
http://www.cnn.com/2005/ALLPOLITICS/02/ ... index.html
John Negroponte, the man responsible for Honduras' death squads and Nicaragua's Contras, moving from his position as Iraq's Ambassador to being the Intelligence Czar.
Oh, happy day! I didn't think there were enough scumbags in this administration.

I NEVER suggested your title was innacurate. To do that I would have to know more information on the topic.Relbeek Einre wrote:Are you suggesting the title is inaccurate? Please explain to me why the architect of Honduran death squads and the Contras is not a terrorist. I'm listening.
But given the title, I was able to predict that your opening post in the thread would be completely negative on all points of Mr. Negroponte, ignoring any positive work or redeming qualities he might have. Given his appointment is to a national post, knowing nothing about him. I have to assume he must have at least some value to the white house. Whether his value is or is not justified given his negatives, I can't say. And from the title, I was pretty sure the information to make an informed decision wouldnt appear.
Before I opened the thread I knew I was going to see a hatchet job and not any kind of an anaylsis as to why he was picked, what value was seen in choosing him or anything else other than a magnification of his negative aspects.
If I did know much about him, I probably wouldnt bother to post anything about him here. It was pretty obvious the author wasnt after a real anaysis of what his appointment means or plausable outcome.
From my perspective it appeared to be a "lets rant and bash Bush and Negroponte". Then after reading the predictable content of your first post. I further predict it will contain some "now we are going to see a repeat of Nicaragua in the middle east".
If this was pre world war II, and this post were about Hitler. I would like to see an objective view of who Hitler is, what his strengths and weaknesses are and given the cureent clime what are the realistic possible effects of his appointment. I seldom fear biased rantings. But if I truely understand the man, his goals and what motivates him AND its believeable (NOT he eats babies at dinner). Then I can really fear him.
But then again this is a "RANT" board, so fire away. =D

I'm sorry, Aabe, but I'm not interested in which sock the man puts on first in the morning.
He's directly responsible for the rape, murder, oppression, and terror of tens of thousands of Central Americans. Not indirectly, not partially -- directly. He is the single worst, most evil sonofabitch to be affiliated with this Administration. And I mean evil. I mean red horns and pitchforks type evil. More evil than Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Ashcroft or Rove. He is a terrorist -- the very type of man upon whom President George W. Bush declared "war". And he's being placed in charge of American intelligence.
I'm not interested in being 'objective'. I'm worried about a man that evil being put in a position to do amazing amounts of damage to the security of our country.

A guy I have only vaguely heard of gets a very important appointment. Then I scan this site to see what I can find out him.
He eats babies for dinner. Why is he still here?
Why would anyone appoint him to anything?
Does he have hidden photos of the bush girls in compromising positions, does he own the deed to Bush's ranch, is he an alien that has mind controlled the white house, maybe bush really is the anti-christ in sheeps clothing and now finally showing his true colors?
I am not disputing your facts, I'm just trying to understand motivation. I care not what sock he puts on first in the morning. If he is so evil, why is he still around? If he's responsible for the Nicaragua evils, sounds like hes been around for a very long time. Even survived prosecution during the Clinton years. (assuming all Republicans are so evil they would never prosecute evil incarnate.)
Does he deny he ever was involved? Does he say it never happened? What?
Without an understanding of why he's not in jail right now, it's kind of tough to buy your statements. Not that I don't believe you, I just have a disconnect with what I am seeing(not uncommon for me). Nothing you are saying makes it believable. In fact the more evil you chalk up to this guy, without explanation why he is still around and not in jail, makes your assertions less believable.
Why did he kill/torture/rape so many innocent people? What did he have to gain or does he just enjoy watching people suffer? Why would Bush even give him the time of day? Why does anyone give him the time of day, let alone a national position of importance? Why are not all the news media screaming for Bush's resignation for having appointed this NeoHitler to a national post of importance?
Why did he just get the appointment?
The only possible answers I can see from what I have learned from this thread so far include:
1.It is a REAL tin-foil hat plot. (world dominace plot, step #24-appoint Negroponte)
2.Bush IS the son of satan.
3.Bush has a gun to his head.
4.Beek is just in a whiney/dramatic mood
I am not happy with any of the 4 answers I have come up with so far. But I am hopeful you can offer me a better one.

The argument which Keebler is making can basicly be summed up by "he said/she said". It will never be resolved in our lifetime (if ever), and more than likely won't affect his current posting (seeing as his being our representative to the UN didn't end in him torturing his fellow UN members [long speeches aside]).But over the years, Mr Negroponte has cut a controversial figure.
In the early 1980s, he was ambassador to Honduras.
At the time, the US was deeply engaged in covert operations in Central America - notably against the Sandinista government of Nicaragua.
Negroponte understands how the pieces fit together in intelligence and in government. And he's loyal, which is crucial to the Bush administration
Intelligence analyst
Profile: John Negroponte
What Mr Negroponte knew about these murky operations, and how far he was aware of human rights abuses committed by US clients in the region is, for some in the US, an open question.
Mr Negroponte has denied any such knowledge or involvement.
One particularly hard-nosed analyst in Washington pointed out, however, that a familiarity with covert operations, counter-insurgency and the abilities and limits of America's secret power is exactly what a man in Mr Negroponte's position needs.
Mr Negroponte's biggest task now will be to restore the credibility of US intelligence.
The previous director of the CIA, George Tenet, reportedly told George Bush that Iraq certainly possessed weapons of mass destruction.
The failure, after the war, to find those weapons - as well as the intelligence agencies' failure to detect and prevent the 11 September plotters - led to a slew of congressional and independent investigations.
Chief among them, the 9/11 Commission found what it said were serious flaws in the way US intelligence agencies operated and interacted.
Legislation signed by President Bush last December calls for a re-organisation of the way the intelligence agencies - all 15 of them - are managed.
Mr Negroponte's job - director of national intelligence - is a child of that legislation.
The post is intended to centralise authority and leadership in intelligence.
"If we're going to stop the terrorists before they strike," said Mr Bush, "we must ensure that our intelligence agencies work as a single, unified enterprise."
