Interesting read. Apparently a friend of then-governor Bush secretly taped him during conversations that took place in the timeframe surrounding Bush's first elction to the Presidency. There are a couple of surprises in the tapes. One of the bigger ones is that Bush would have preferred Ashcroft as the Veep. Another is his non-exclusionary stance for homosexuals.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

The perfect leak.
Nothing in there real incriminating or shocking, but perfect for people to point to and go 'ZOMG'.

Re: Secret Bush tapes
I was surprised by the Ashcroft for V.P. quote as well. First time I had ever heard that statement. Ashcroft got what would normally be the more influential of the two positions (which he may well have requested) although Cheney has certainly made the most of the Vice Presidency. I think Ashcroft would have hurt him slightly in the Gore race as he would have been more off-putting to moderates than Cheney.Embar Angylwrath wrote:One of the bigger ones is that Bush would have preferred Ashcroft as the Veep. Everything else seemed like vintage Bush. Surprised there is not more discussion of the ethics regarding Mr. Wead's actions. In many states (including Maryland as Linda Tripp discovered) his actions are a criminal offense.

You're assuming, of course, that they were released without Bush's knowledge or consent.Everything else seemed like vintage Bush.
