Really time for Israel to come clean about their attack on this vessel. They attacked this vessel by mistake at first I believe. But the tradgedy is that when they realized it was a US ship, rather than offer assistance they sent in torpedo boats and gunships in an effort to sink the vessel so there would be no record of what happend.

Time for some honesty on this one.

Yes, I see the theory. But there would be distress signals. In all probability, there would be survivors.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, the time that Israel knew the nationality of the ship was apparently known and apparently subject to documentation. The time that the ship would have been sunk would have been known and subject to documentation. Therefore, documentation would show that the sinking of the ship would have occurred after Israel knew of the ship's true nationality.

Simply stated, basic knowledge of forensic examination precludes, in my mind, that Israel tried to sink a US ship as part of a cover-up. The fog of war seems like the most likely explanation.

The radio transcripts (which surfaced last year) apparently show that the pilot requested and received confirmation that they were to sink a ship flying a US flag. Until that transcript came to light, it was assumed "fog of war", but to request and receive permission from HQ for the action is a totally different question.

What is generally floated as a plausible scenario is the Israelis were using, or considering using some tactics the US would disapprove of and so they set about eliminating the US ELINT assets in the area - namely that ship, to create plausible deniability and therefore not lose the US as an ally.

Let's just say there's a good reason I used "apparently" in my statement, cause when I read the transcripts it really didn't seem clear to me that anyone had much of a clue what was going on.

History Channel did a 1 hour episode about this. The Ship WAS flagging not 1..but 2 US flags, and they broadcasted a Open SOS because their encryption equipment was damage by Israeli gunfire. Israel even sent gunships to strafe the Liberty with Machinegun fire. It is believe Israel attacked the Ship to keep US forces from seeing from Israel was doing in Syria.

Well it wasn't very open. It's taken 40 years to just start to make the public aware. I am sure Israel said all the right things behind closed doors to appologize at the time and every administration since then has been stuck not wanted to divulge it.

I have done my research, and there is not much to this.

Google USS Liberty and you will get a lot of hits. Sort through them, and you pretty much come up with a fog of war situtation.

I am very sorry for he sailors' lives that were lost. The acounts of of the NSA tapes show a mistake. Israel paid damages of 13,000,000,000 dollars.

Nearly all of the cites I hit stated that Congress had ben overcome by Iraelis.

This is borderline anti-semitism.
