Barak Obama... suicide
Political suicide, that is.

Nothing like insinuating that Lincoln was the Great Emancipator, to end your political aspirations to the White House.
If he really thinks that way, he should have kept his mouth shut. It's strictly a personal opinion, and one that is sure to alienate some (a whole bunch) of people. Major political gaffe.
I give him less than 24 hours before he starts the "I didn't say what I really said" dance.

Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

Eh.
For the most part, as I understand it, he's right though...
Good point, political suicide.
But, Obama's race ended the day he was born. Sorry, Tom. We're just not ready yet.

Most people's knowledge of US history is gross simplifications and elementary school textbook patriotism. Anyone can say Lincoln freed the slaves. Not as many can say how Lincoln felt about slavery at the beginning of his presidency and how that differed from his attitude at the end of his presidency. I'll leave it up to you to study up on that. Once you have covered the material you may realize what Obama was talking about.

I think that the public will be shocked that Obama has the ability to speak his own words and have true convictions.....something overwhemingly lacking in the current DNC (i.e. Hillary, Bill, and Kerry.)
Personally, I think he is a very intellegent man. His statements were definatly not PC but, I don't think he will suffer to much overall. Just needs to distance himself from the current DNC leadership me thinks

I think Cro has a good point. But as we've seen before, candor is usually not in a politician's best interest, especially when challenging societal conceptions.Harlowe wrote:I agree with Croinc. Shoot me or something. =)

Look, my hero in American letters is Thomas Jefferson. But I have to accept that not only did he own slaves, he was fucking at least one of them.
I like to think that his universal truths about basic human freedoms transcend his deeds, no matter how despicable they were, nor how hypocritical they make some of what he said seem.
But I can't be blind to the simple facts.

Re: Eh.
He claimed that all men should be free of tyrrany......and then went home to his slave- cooked meals. As did many of the forefathers.Xican wrote:So Jefferson had Jungle Fever? Don't hate.

For those with an historical interest, Lincoln gave a speech in New York City in 1860, before he was even officially a presidential candidate. This speech, referred to as the Cooper Union address, is widely credited with earning him the Republican nomination and thence his first Presidential term.
The speech, incidentally, was on the topic of slavery.
It may be found at:

While I find it amusing that the Dems should be desperate to revise Lincoln's record on racial politics...which happens to be FAR better than some currently-serving Democrat legislators I could mention...this speech quite effectively gives the lie to any Lib theory that Lincoln was some kind of closet racist.
The Emancipation Proclamation, as well as Lincoln's other work, reflected the necessity to balance his own personal ideals against the welfare and stability of the nation he had sworn to serve. Political idealogy sometimes must be tempered with a healthy dose of reality...sometimes what is desired is less important than what is possible.
