DVD-RW

Post by Finglefinn »

Help! I'm going to buy a DVD-RW drive like soon.

Any thoughts about brands, quality, etc?

Keep in mind I am pretty un-knowndegable about 'puter stuff. I don't even know how to put the new drive in that I'll be buying. And I won't be doing lots and lots of stuff on it.

So far, I like this one the best:

If you don't need software/cable:

If you do, or you just like the retail box:

All of those things are pretty cheap, as far as computer components go. Last time I bought one, I elected to go for a portable USB one, so I can easily flip it between computers.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

I'd buy it from newegg, but I have a best buy gift card to burn, so I'm kinda limited to what they have. Nothing else at BB I currently want or need or I'd just spend the gift card on something bigger.

I am however, going to upgrade to a 2GB microSD card for my cell phone via newegg. The cingular store wants $80 for the 2GB card and at newegg its only $45. What a racket.

Thanks for the link Bahd.

One DVD-RW is pretty much the same as another. Get dual layer, just because it's no real extra cost, but other than that there's really not much to split them.

Installing an internal drive is a matter of plugging cable from drive to motherboard and plugging in power. Then screw drive into the mounting bay.

They are a commodity item. One is as good as another.

Yeah, they're a commodity. I buy whatever NewEgg has on sale at the time. Long as it's black and burns stuff... Going rate is $29-39 for an internal.

I have a good USB external also because I had a Best Buy giftcard.

Wife: Call the number on the back of the card!
Me: Why it's probably like 100 bucks if that
Wife: *nag*
Phone System: "You have .... 1 ..... (see I told you) .... thousand dollars on your card... (holy fuckn' shit ... guess they liked my work)"

Lite-On is my favorite brand. Anything besides Lite-On, Sony, or Pioneer is gonna give you more failed burns. I tried LG a few times, big mistake.

If you're replacing an older drive you should just have to make sure its the same type (IDE or SATA) and directly switch the cables from one to the other.

My DVD burner has been through a lot, I definitely love it.

If you are looking to "backup" DVDs and want an easy tip on how to do so, check out DVD shrink + Nero. (two different programs, uber combination)

How'd the install go? I'm hoping your PC had SATA connectors on the motherboard (completely forgot about SATA/IDE differences when you asked).
