City of Heroes
Issue 9 came out and they invited me back to try it out for free for a few days. The big thing now is the new crafting system and consignment trading system. You now pick up a lot of salvage for crafting enchancments or temporary powers. The new craftable enhancements are pretty cool. Even the lowest crafted single power attibute enhancement is better than one you can buy at a store. There are now some enhancements that boost as many as four power attibutes. There are also now enhancement sets where you get a bunch of little boosts to your stats if you have the whole set in a power (kind of like the equipment sets in Diablo II). Crafting is easy although it can be a bit cumbersome due to very limited inventory slots.
The trading is interesting because it is a blind bidding system. You don't know who you are buying from, and you don't know what the lowest available price is. You simply put in what you're willing to pay. The other thing is that the trading spans all servers, so you trade with highly populated servers and low populated servers, everyone is on the same playing field. The searching function to find what you want to buy works pretty smooth most of the time, but it did choke a couple of times and I had to get out of the window and start over.
The overall game play is about the same, but the new enchancements and sets will undoubtedly help appease some of the disgruntled players. Especially those from Issue 6 when the devs rolled out enhancement diversification which pissed a lot of players off.

City of Heroes is a game for fagets and pedophiles. The only people I have ever seen play CoH were either graybearded elementary school janitors who were already accused of fondling little boys or guys my age so fucking ugly and pathetic they made me look attractive and popular.
I'd like to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my ass.

I downloaded and tried it again. It was fun, I might sign up for a month.
Big groups are the way to go at high levels. My 41 tanker could jump into a group of 15 or so and aggro and stay alive. The death penalty seemed smaller, clear another large group out and you're debt free. Combat is fast and fun.
But it's hard finding groups like that since the servers aren't all that crowded.
The new loot system seems like a good start. Maybe something that should have been in at release? I heard that the endgame encounter is still Hamidon. Which was the end game encounter at release.
I haven't tried CoV yet... not sure I can do 14 levels with no travel power.

how is that game these days? I played it when it was released and it was a ton of fun but most of the folks I went there to play with stopped so I did too. (and now i cant remember what my login/pwd was or find my install discs)
I have been thinking about checking it out again. I had a blast with the different builds and customizing characters was pretty damn fun and I actually got to roleplay again for the first time since I started grouping all the time in eq, and it was funny as hell and i spent a good part of my playtime cracking up irl.
I had shecky, the softspoken but angry jew that only fought the fifth colum, san fran santa the giant pink aging gay clubber that only spoke to people to inform them of how he was going to enter their chimney or that he had a big package for them, and beep the robotic bubble defender who ONLY said "beep" and had "beep" attatched to every single one of his skills, and when folks became annoyed that I only ever said beep, I assured them that I was indeed a human playing the game by saying binary for "beep"
its amusing how you can weird folks right out and they freak on you about it but will tolerate it if you play well.
And of course I had regular characters like my main guy, Jookman, a lightning and ice blaster that was crazy fun to kite with, and a defender who was originally created with the sole intent of summoning alluveal while he hovered at the top of the map =D
Is it worth checking out as a starting character? I hear there is pvp and if the game mechanics are even remotely similar to how they used to be, wow could I do some evil things to folks that earn my wrath.

I think the wiki history on it is pretty accurate. Nothing hurt the game worse than the "Enhancement Diversity" they rolled out in Issue 6. So many people got pissed off and left that the populations on most servers is always green. On a couple it is occasionally yellow. You used to be able to upgrade a power up to 200% in any category by six slotting with the same enhancement. So a 6 damage attack could me made into a 18 damage attack or a power that reset every 18 seconds could be made to reset every 6 seconds. They wiped that out with ED. The maximum you can get out of a power is about 120%. Generally it doesn't make sense to slot more than 3 of any one tpye now, because the returns diminish drastically after three.
They also castrated blasters to the point that they can hardly solo. On the other hand, playing a dark melee/regeneration scrapper is a lot of fun. Even with ED, there are so many ways to successfully enhance and build up your character that ED really doesn't hurt that much. If you start a new character, definately read a guide, you can find many at places like coldfront.net. There are many combinations that work well and even more that don't work at all.

I agree on that one. After the diminishing returns patch I abandoned my main. I had a fire blaster tweaked out to take advantage of 6 slotting. Using 6 slotted haste, Targeting drone and endurance to allow me to 6 slot damage in all my attacks. When the patch got put in place I Could barely solo a blue con.
Fortunately that was about the time City of Villains came out so I just started up a Master Mind. Currently my main is an Ice / Ice Tank back on the hero side.

I haven't tried CoV, but I hear playing a Master Mind is a lot of fun if you can handle the graphics. They say a team of 6 Master Minds used to bring everyones system down to a crawl, but a team like that was pretty much unstopable. What I can't figure out is how so many pets can be managed. That would be like 6 people with 4 or 5 pets each. 24-30 pets running around!

a full team of 8 MMs with a full 6 pets each is 56. that pretty kicks any system in the nuts.
I have done it but I had to turn all my graphics options down. Another problem is wandering through tight spaces with a full raid size party. Pet control comes down to auto target nearest enemy and give the "all pets attack my target" command. And hope that they are attacking something usefully
But yes. a full team of MM's is incredibly powerful..

Re:
I'm still playing on Virtue. Ton of lowbies, nothing bigger than 28.
The new enhancement system really works well, especially if you're someone who won't do Hamidon raids (I never have time, forget about levels) - the dual enhancers look to really bump up your characters and allow for much more diverse builds.
Biggest MM group I've been in had 4, and that damn near killed my gameplay. I can't imagine running 8 without going back to C-64 graphics.

As a BTW, Come ON, Klast. You knew that was ripe for the nerf bat. Hell, you know it hurt my poor old MA/SR Scrapper, and I can still solo quite well.Klast Brell wrote:I agree on that one. Oh I fully admit it needed to be nerfed. I Was taking out large groups of yellow and orange cons with 2 hits of AE damage. I told everyone I fully expected to be nerfed. I just didn't feel like trying to respec and learn a whole new way to play my toon at level 43. So I just started a new toon from scratch and moved on. No biggy.

The problem with the nerf is that I can still take out a large group of 8 or 9 reds with my scrapper, but my blaster can barely get away with killing 3 or 4 yellows. The scrappers got nerfed too, but the nerf hit the rate at which large groups can be taken on (no perma haste, so have to wait for powers to reset). But that's just for large or hard encounters. 3 or 4 yellow, orange, red enemies is simple for the scrapper using no special powers. Blasters have to use everything in their arsenal, and the large group of reds is impossible unless they are melee only and you can kite them around. Blasters need a bigger damage boost without having to run around with 2% health to get it.

I still dig CoH, been playing on the Freedom server since about a week after launch. I6 didn't really bug me. I play an Energy /Energy Manipulation blaster and I haven't really noticed that big of a drop off. Most of my blasts were single shot single opponent so it didn't really hurt me all that much.
My wife plays an Electricity / Electricy Manipulation blaster and she noticed a big drop in her powers. Alotta tanks (that were still playing after being beaten near to death with the I5 nerf bat) complained alot as did controllers.
Seriously though, there were some broken F'n power sets on that game. At launch, I had a pal level up a dark melee/ regen scrapper all the way to 50 in no more than two weeks. Course he was a nutty player and has been playing MMORPS so much lately he eats raw fish and keeps looking for some friggin ring he swares we stole from him.
At any rate, I still enjoy the game. The market for MMORPG's now a days isn't limited to EQ and Ultima Online anymore, theres always gonna be ebb's and flows in server populations.
WoW went through the same thing before the expansion launch. It just happens people wanna try new stuff.
