I've watched the spore videos and don't deny it looks amazing and very cool. I don't think it has the ability to keep many people interested in the long term though. Sure, you can design new beings, but what then? Its the same progression and evolution of the chosen kind. I doubt it will be fun after the second time through, unless new options for it have surfaced since I last looked at it.

That's sort of what I'm wondering too - how much does your creature's design affect the gameplay itself. Sure, they've done great things with the inverse kinematics to get everything looking pretty but what actual difference will it make to MY game if I put on 4 legs instead of 3?
I remember Evolva where you got to mess with the creature's looks to give specific gameplay results (speed, strength, leaping ability, etc.) but everything I've seen of Spore just makes the whole creature design look like eye candy for a civ game.

i dunno, the main idea of weapons (ie pincers, claws, ect) prolly effects the early game more than the end game stuff. however, im pretty sure i remember stuff about how you can change the creatures brain size and shit like that.
i mean, if they're taking this long to make a game, it can't be that bad.

Edit: Often a massively delayed cycle means that playtesting was failing the "fun" factor so people are revising at the design level to try to fix what may have just been a bad idea to begin with that sounded good on paper.
