Linux in the workplace?
Just wondering if anyone had any success or any advice with running a Linux workstation in a "Microsoft-oriented" workplace environment. I've played around with it a little bit, but I've slowed down after having a lot of Outlook-related exchange issues. I have a Windows XP box as a back up, but I'm not sure if I want to give up on Linux just yet.

I'm running linux as the primary OS on both of my work PCs. The (older) thinkpad R32 laptop was kind of a pain with the crummy ati graphics drivers available. The desktop does much better with the intel graphics, and can even run compiz acceptably.
I'm using Ubuntu 7.04, and have a VM with winxp for the last few apps that require windows. My employer also uses notes for email so I am able to use the native client. Since the desktop is pretty recent, the performance of the vm isn't much different that I'd expect for those apps if I had booted into windows (P4 3ghz cpu, 2gb ram)
I've worked at places where I'd never have been able to do this, but I currently work for a software company and as long as security standards are met (virus scanner, pw security, etc) we can pretty much do whatever we want to our workstations. Of course, I don't expect any support from our pc techs.
If you have any specific questions, let me know.

Re: Linux in the workplace?
In the late 90s we had CC:Mail at HP for the entire 4 years i worked there. People migrated to Outlook, but that was only the front end; the backend wasn't migrated to Exchange until after I left.
