is there a way to.......
change the administrator account password if you don't know the old one? i'm not talking about a user account password but entire system pw.

i have been experiencing some difficulties with computer. most of the incidents happen in games. either everything freezes for up to a minute and then comes back or it locks up completely. i ran a chkdsk and it showed 4kb were bad. i have also ran several av's including housecall, trojanhunter, avg. trojanhunter came up with 2 trojans named generic.rar and cleaned them. yet i still can't stay in game. a rootkit detector came up with nothing. i decided to run recovery console to repair the bad sectors but it keeps asking me for a pw. to my knowledge i don't have a pw but i cant get past that screen. i just reinstalled xp a few months ago and i'm pretty certain i did not create a system pw. i'll do just about anything to avoid another reformat and reinstall so if anyone has any ideas let me know please!

also, i checked the physical guts of system. they are clean and dust-free. operating temp is good at 46 degrees idle and 49 degrees in game, well within acceptable parameters for athlon processors. actually, right now it's running at a cool 45 degrees.

Sounds like a memory issue to me. Download memtest and let it run overnight.

I'm not going to link to any hacks, but there are several wars of obtaining or changing the administrator password on XP. Just do a little creative googling.

are you getting a password prompt at the bios initial startup or the actual xp welcome screen. if its bios you should be able to reset the jumper and flash the bios and clear the password. if its XP if you have another account thats admin you can use that to create another account and delete the one thats giving you problems.

It should have asked you for an admin password when you installed XP. In fact, it wouldn't have let you install without asking for an admin password.

Easiest way to change it is right click on "My Computer", go to "Manage" and choose "Local Users and Groups". Select "Users" then right click "Administrator" and right click to pick "Set Password..."

If you're completely stuck and can't log into the system at all, there's a boot CD here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ that lets you change any user's password on the system.

You don't need to boot to the recovery console to check the disks anyway. Just go to a command prompt, type "chkdsk c: /f" and it will do a full check and repair on the next reboot.
