Funny thing is the commercials for Apple never mention the whole DRM issue with Vista activation, etc. That's what a lot of people hate beside the bloatware. Is Leopard any better with those issues?

klast what exactly are you doing may i ask. The reason i ask is because I pirate the fuck out of everything. almost all my music to half the software i own. And Im not talking about solely limewire. I use sources such as IRC, Torrents, etc.Klast Brell wrote:I'm running vista ultimate at home. (won a copy at a giveaway at a trade show) I guess I fall in to the hater bracket. I'll keep using it, but it will continue to piss me off in some ways. Mainly. It assumes I'm a thief. Every other change from XP to Vista had something to do with DRM. And it impacts performance as it wastes processor cycles making sure I'm not trying to steal something every time I do anything.
as far as the DRM BS i have a program that removes copy protection ^_^ so that hasnt been an issue for me

Lets see.
Gimped graphics driver functionality.
Alt Tab out of a video game (or even just closing the program) takes 30 seconds to a minute even though I have 4 cores

Re: Vista, this says it all
Ok - trying to help out here, and assuming separate items you were listing:
- Gimped graphics driver functionality:
Not entirely sure what you're meaning here. Yes - things were changed and some functionality was lost moving to the new driver model. Not sure how much of it had to do with DRM though. The biggest loss of functionality was not being able to run two different graphics cards in the one machine (ie 2 different video drivers). For a single video card though, there really isn't any lost functionality I know of, or I could just be missing something?
The changes to audio drivers probably deserve more attacking than video drivers. While moving them to user mode was nice for mixing audio from several different applications (and being able to have separate volume controls for each), it did remove a lot of functionality for hardware mixing and effects. Wasn't particularly because of DRM that the audio was changed, but was definitely part of the equation.
- Alt-Tab response
I actually found this quicker if going program to program (eg. going from eq2 to IE), though I will agree that the desktop takes a while to respond. I don't believe that has anything to do with DRM, just the desktop being composited rather than directly drawn, so it has to swap everything into video memory...
wait...
are you talking Digital Restrictions Management, or Desktop Rendering Manager?

Have had absolutely zero problems with alt tabbing and I have a quad core as well with Vista. If anything the graphic driver issues go away when running in windowed modes.

Re: Vista, this says it all
RSAK are you utilizing the ready boost utility at all? I only ask out of curiosity. I havent had the slow down problems...maybe its just me. Honestly I notice a pause as you alt tab but nothing noticeable. Im also running a single core 64-bit chip and 2 Gigs of ram along with a radeon 800XT.
Ddrak, question for you... Does it matter if youre running the 64 bit version versus the 32 bit version. I ask only because I have heard different things but personally noticed I dont experience as much slowdown as I did when I had the 32 bit pirated version...

I'm running 64, my wife is running 32. Haven't really noticed a difference between them.Desolus wrote:Ddrak, question for you... Early adopted to Vista, no problems at all. In fact, I rather enjoy it.Partha wrote:You know, maybe it's because I'm not a tech head, but I did just fine with 3.1....and 95...and ME....and XP....and will be just fine with Vista - because I'll let it mature before I install it. Early adoption isn't the thing to do with a new OS, folks.
Early Adopted to Leopard, no problems at all and its very pretty.

They call it cutting edge for a reason.. because it will make you bleed one way or another. If you don't have that tolerance for pain, aggravation, or just plain wasted time then wait for the service pack. If you want the benefits and don't mind the cost then early adoption is for you.

Re: Vista, this says it all
Well the transition to Vista Ultimate so I could run 64bit was a challenge. The setup that ran Vista 32 bit with no flaws was randomly locking up with no event log entry or anything. Started with the graphic driver since screen saver seemed to set it off, but when the stuck sound was heard I finally got it working with a flashed motherboard bios and then fixing the mess with the graphic card driver. Was strange that MB worked fine in 32 bit, but was catastrophic in 64 bit.
And double check windows update/nvidia's recommended hotfixes for the alt tabbing thing. I think i read somewhere in there that a patch was designed to fix it. One of these:
