OK so some mathematicians thought up a puzzle and set about solving it.
Are there any real world applications to this?
"A few months ago, I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and best intentions still tell me that's true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not." - Ronald Reagan 1987
When you try applying it to theoretical physics when dealing with energy, black holes, quantum particles, or other such things that behave just a bit differently than we suspected then it might be very useful.

A lot of field physics follows a related ruleset, with certain rules about looping. As our control over EM fields and things like the casmir effect become more subtle, this kind of puzzle solving will become more important for engineers.
