video cards

does anyone know of a really decent low profile video card? i'd appreciate any input.

No real experience with the low profile ones, but what do you want to use it for? Most low profile stuff is sold to the HTPC market so you won't see any really high end performance from them.

because i'm an idiot and when i bought my new computer i needed something with a small footprint due to space constraints. so far i have no complaints and am generally pleased with it but it has a sucktastic integrated video card which i want to replace asap.

I'm assuming your motherboard has a PCI-Express slot in it, by the way. Make sure it will actually plug in before you go spending money.

actually it has 2 pci-e slots. my last computer was agp so i'm fairly new to pci-e technology. aren't the slots themselves of a standard size?

PCI-E and PCI-X have different slot types.

The slots are standard (sort of - see below) for the types they put on motherboards. They should be about the same size as a PCI slot. If the motherboard says it supports PCI-Express video cards then you're fine. 2 slots just means it supports SLI.

PCI-Express can have a number of sizes, but only the X1 and X16 sizes make it onto motherboards. The X1 slot is tiny - less than an inch. The X16 (the one you want) is about the same size as PCI.
