Re: Doomsday Collider of Doom
It's just going to spew Higgs Bosons everywhere, which will then have to be hunted down and put back where they came from!

The BBC ran this, but at that time Nov 2007 was the "turn on" date.

My intolerant religious viewpoint is that if God wanted us to smash atoms, he would've given us all tiny hammers.

Really a shame the super collider in Texas was never completed or turned on.

Re: Doomsday Collider of Doom
They can only manage to come up with $15 mil a year for Fermilab; they're passing out the pink slips this year. The SCSC would have wound up costing about $30B at the rate the price was inflating and probably about a million bucks a day to operate. Congress has been hack-slashing research across the board for a while now. Particle physicists looking for private funding is not a pretty sight.
I'm not sure if I hope they find the Higgs Boson or not. I think the truth is probably a lot more elegant than the Standard Model.

Here we go!

Same old story still, but now we can sit back and watch the world not end.
I can't even wrap my head around how the hell you collide atoms. I'd knock on wood and call it a day.

You collide protons (they aren't doing anything with atoms) the same way you collide billiard balls - slam them into each other.Select wrote:I can't even wrap my head around how the hell you collide atoms. I'd knock on wood and call it a day.
Also note they aren't actually doing anything real there in the way of experiments for at least another few weeks. Right now they're just running 1 beam around the loop. The actual experiment involves 2 beams running in opposite directions.
