Netflix only streams in HD with a player connected to your TV, not over the computer.

Yep, and the netflix box at some point has to be connected to the intraweb thingy, either to a router or I suppose directly to the cable modem itself. Has to be one or the other. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise. And the router it's connected to can be setup (depending on the router) for QoS so that computers in the household can surf pretty much normally while the netflix box is trying to suck the connection dry.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:Netflix only streams in HD with a player connected to your TV, not over the computer.
Edit: It's also possible Harlowe that you have an old router with an older CPU that can't keep up with the load on your network. My sister's network would grind to a halt even downloading torrents at 20k and it turned out that she had a 7 year old router.

That's incorrect. No you can watch Netflix via your computer using your tv as the monitor or your xbox 360, even in HD. In fact via your computer was the only way to do it until xbox 360 made it avail last month.Netflix only streams in HD with a player connected to your TV, not over the computer.

Must be nice to have a component or HDMI connection to your TV from your computer, then.Harlowe wrote:That's incorrect. Xbox 360 only recently got the ability to stream Netflix, and of course it can do HD (I never disputed that, just the computer).\HD on your Netflix Ready Device
Certain titles are available to watch in HD on your Netflix ready device. In order to watch in HD you need:
* A HD TV and component or HDMI connection from your Netflix ready device to your TV
* A high-speed internet connection at time of playback (typically 5 Mbps or higher)
Also, you can stream over Macs now (finally).

I'm certainly no expert, but I thought most of the nicer HDTV's now came with an HDMI connection.

I was going with most laptop computers don't have a way to connect via HDMI, not sure about desktops because I haven't been in the market to upgrade/build in a while.

Re: Demonoid
I watch streaming netflix on my computer as well. A while ago netflix performance went in to the toilet. It woulds give me the usual testing your connection speed dialogue, then pop up saying my movie would start in 2 or 3 hours. Once it said 10 hours. In the past it had taken 5 or 10 seconds for my movie to start so something was definitely wrong.
I did my speed tests using the usual utilities and I'm still getting the same speed I had before. Maybe it was a glitch on netflix's end. I try to watch a movie a few days later and the same thing happens. And again the next week. Finally I start to wonder if it's comcast throttling. Quick google search. Comcast + Netflix. Yup, there are a ton of people with the same problem. I figured other people were already complaining to comcast and to netflix and I didn't need to add my voice to the crowd. A few weeks ago movies started working again. Comcast must have finally tweaked their filters to allow Netflix, while choking Bit torrent.

Comcast's old system just went after P2P AFAIK and not any other protocols. They throttled the bit torrent protocol by issuing TCP resets to seeders, which was most heinous, and probably even illegal. Not to mention easy to circumvent with a VPN.
Their new system is protocol agnostic, and it isn't throttling.
