Converting file formats ?

Post by Ariannda Kusanagi »

So i have a bunch of files on my pc, several movies sent to me by a friend, but I'd like to be able to burn them to DVD so the kids can watch them on the DVD player.... but I seem to be at a loss. I have a Sony NS57P which will only support certain formats (http://products.howstuffworks.com/sony- ... review.htm). I have Roxio CD creator that came installed and I downloaded VLC file player to watch them on my PC and also DivX... I went and bought some DVD's to burn onto as opposed to DVR or DVRW but i'm still at a bit of a loss as to what I should be using to actually rip these files into a format i can burn.

any ideas ?

I use Nero Vision (part of the Nero 9 pack) to make DVDs, but there's lots of apps out there which will do it for you just as easily.

Just Google "DVD Creator" and play around with them - most have a free trial.

http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/mydvd/mydvd.html
http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-creator.html
etc.

If you want to be a complete geek you can check out http://www.doom9.org and use the free utilities/guides there too.

Roxio is a company that offers a lot of different products. I'm pretty sure Easy CD Creator doesn't do anything with DVD video.

There's one my dad uses where you just press a button and it copies the DVD, but I forget the name. DVD Clone maybe?

That's what I use to convert DVD's into Divx format for storage on a hard drive, but I don't think it can write those movies back to the DVD. In fact I just looked and it doesn't seem to do that. All my movies are going one way - from disc to file.

I was under the impression that tools like Roxio and Nero could do that though /shrug.

It does disc to disc, at least the newest versions do.

If none of this helps and if I can remember, I'll check what we have on the comps in the Digital Media building. Lots of film and VSFX majors, so they need to be able to do all sorts of things. We have some more expensive software, but we've also got the cheaper stuff.

Is it trying to write to a CD or DVD?

DVD's have a 4.7G limit. Most movies are dual layer so go up to 9G. DVD Shrink should deal with this though.

DVDShrink, AnyDVD and DVDClone seemed to have solved the Harry Potter problem. I had to rent the same copies of the movies I own since they were my son's favorites and now they're all scratched to unwatchable. Extracted the files, and was able to remove all the other crap and they burned to DVD just fine. I have some movies on my computer i burned to CD without any problems as well.
