"We don't know if she will develop the pregnancy up to the end because of the structure of her body. It is a big risk for her," the doctor who confirmed her pregnancy before she was taken to the institute, Jose Severiano Cavalcanti, told the Diario de Pernambuco.

"She doesn't have a pelvis able to support a gestation of twins," he explained.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape or if the woman's health is in danger.

I think it meets the criteria.

Probably a different topic, but I hate the mentality that just because a girl has "grass on the field" or is menstruating, that she can or should have kids. The body does a lot of developing after that to be able to safely support a fetus. Of course, different people develop at different rates, but there's usually a good deal of hip difference between a college woman and that same woman when she was a girl in early high school.

The local hospital in Texas delivered a baby to a 9 year old. Personally I had a baby at 16, and i gained 50 lbs which put me to a total of 175 on my 5 ft 7 frame, and i looked strangely better then i had at 125 (it was the curves i'm sure) however my body wasn't done developing at that point... I HAVE a 9 year old, and she would be getting an abortion, plain and simple. Incest, abuse, rape, she'd be getting an abortion. There is no way she should have to suffer the trails of pregnancy and labor at her age for the sake of adoption. Now if she was 15 or 17 that's a different matter entirely, but there's no WAY they should LET a CHILD have to go through the whole ordeal. Perhaps an abortion's not better exactly, but.... i mean they don't even understand whats going on at that age =(

We used to worry about that with my wife's daughter. When a girl is disabled and can't speak she tends to fall prey to that more than a healthy child. I hear it was much more of a problem before they had the genetic testing. It tended to be medical staff and they never got caught. Hard to talk the state of CA into depo shots for a 12 year old - took years but we did it, and we have a good staff that considers her family. So I've spent a decade worrying that we'd end up having a girl with the mind of a 6 month old carrying a baby, which is quite the ethical dilema as well.

Luckily we have the genetic testing. Doesn't cure the problem but it's a good deterent with someone knowing they could be nailed to a tree for vicimizing a child like that.

So yeah, this is a subject we've been debating for a long long time. At least now we trust the staff and it's easy to get the depo shots for a 22 year old. But all it takes is once, then what the hell would we do. So I'm not morally opposed to taking a life to save a life - abortion for rape is a no-brainer to me as well - but if it's all the same I'd rather never be in that position, and we fight the government and insurance companies almost daily to make sure it doesn't happen. And I believe the staff even has to have a DNA sample on file.

Doctors said the girl's case met both these conditions, but the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Jose Cardoso Sobrinho said the law of God was above any human law.

He said the excommunication would apply to the child's mother and the doctors, but not to the girl because of her age.

Yes, God will judge. And one more cleric will end up in hell.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, himself a Catholic, said on Friday that he regretted what he described as the cleric's deeply conservative attitude.

"The doctors did what had to be done: save the life of a girl of nine years old," he said.

It's a shame this man isn't in the place of the cleric.
