Sun's been dying a slow death for a long time now - after their mismanagement of Java and gradual loss of server marketshare to Linux on x86 machines, there's really been nothing left for them. I've been waiting for them to go into receivership, but I guess IBM decided not to wait and to snap up Java (Sun's only worthwhile asset, which isn't that hot any more now that it's been open sourced) before someone like Microsoft did.

I don't think it will affect the industry that much aside from it being more official that IBM is driving Java again. IBM is really the only company out there making decent money from open source because they've always been service oriented rather than a pure hardware or software company.

Sun still has it's patent portfolio.

Hmm a large, mediocre company buying another large, mediocre company ... sounds like a winning formula to me boss!

They also still hold a large number of contracts with government entities and government contractors, in fact I think if you took a short trip down to Eagan you would find a large Sun footprint there.
