TV questions

Post by Ddrak »

Think I'm going to break down and get a TV bigger than the 22" LCD I have now. Question is whether the frame interpolation (200Hz for PAL or 240Hz for NTSC) stuff is worth the extra money? I'm thinking either a 46" or 52" LCD here.

Not speaking from experience, but I have a friend that follows this shit like a religion and he says that not only is the higher mhz not worth the money, he says that at lower hz the pictures have some bonus. What/who/where/why I don't know, but the guy knows his shit.

Also, those who do DLP swear by them and defend them to a fault. If you don't absolutely have to have super micro thin you might look into those. Save you some phat ass cheese vs size. Amazon has a 72" samsung 1080p for 1800 bucks, and the thing really isn't that thick even at the base.

I am fixing to buy me a 65+ inch one as well, so I'm sort of in the same boat. Will be interesting to see what you come up with Dd.

Measure the distance from your couch to the TV. Go to a store that has all the TVs running. Stand that distance away from the TVs. DON"T CHEAT! You are not going to be sitting 3 feet from the TV at home so don't evaluate the TV from 3 feet away. If your eyes can tell a difference in resolution, interpolation or frame rate, by all means go for the better numbers. BUT. If you cant see the difference with your eyes at the distance you will allways be sitting from the TV, then don't waste your money.

I have a DLP. I like it, but I think I have some settings issues with it, since I get pixelation when the scenes go really dark, or there's a lot of fast action, like a NASCAR race. (Part of it may be my satellite signal though.. it happens more there than with a DVD).

Overall, I'm very impressed with the brightness and crispness of the DLP. Also, unlike plasmas and LCDs, parts of the screen can't fail. You lose a bulb, that's all. (So if you go the DLP route, always have a couple of spare bulbs on hand)

I have seen pixelation on an analog CRT. It's not your TV. It's the compression rate your cable provider is using.

Its actually a sattelite signal, and the run from the dish to the DLP is over 100 feet, probably closer to 120 feet. I have signal filters installed in the line, but no signal booster. The boosters for satellite HDTV are pricey, about $150. I'm willing to spend that if it would help. Do any of you techies know if boosting an HDTV signal from a satellite feed (DirecTv) actually works?

Wish we had as many options over here as you guys do there. No Amazon here and no retailers seem to stock DLP any more.

Pretty sure I'm going to go with a 46" Samsung LCD: link

@Embar:

It's probably nothing to do with your reception. The TV provider is just compressing the video stream too much which causes blocking (exactly the same as the blocking on YouTube).

Would a signal booster help? Or would that just compound the issue by boosting an over-compressed signal? Or have no effect at all?

I would guess no effect at all. It depends on the pixellation though - if the display is pausing when it's pixellated then it could be low signal strength (display pausing means temporary loss of signal) and a booster could help that. If it's just seeing blocks in dark areas where there's little contrast then the issue is at the broadcaster's end.

That makes sense, from the little I know. I don't get a pause, just a degradation fo picture.

Still... I'm tempted to try the signal amplifier, because I know that long line runs of a non-powered signal tend to degrade because of:
1. Bad connectors (and the loss of energy at the connection)
2. Energy dissipation (leakage through the line)
3. Residual grounding (more energy dissipation)
4. Unplanned increase in the ohms (usually by running or securing the lines to or near metallic structures like air conditioner vents and copper water lines)

Your thoughts?

Well, it certainly can't hurt. Another option is find someone else with the same setup as you and see if they get similar blocking?

Samsung makes mighty fine TVs, and as long as you've got a model that supports dejudder (it looks like you do) then I'd call it a win.
