Taken By Surprise
I unexpectedly received a netbook for the holidays. That completely threw me for a loop since I wasn't expecting any gifts. Just one mention a few days before Christmas to my stepmom about wanting to save up for one and BAM, gifted. I think it was her way of showing my sister and I we're loved through these problems my mother is causing this Christmas. :3
To the point: I was given an Acer Aspire One. Any thoughts on it? I'm also going to dig through that laptop thread... in a few days. So far, it's pretty smooth and I love how little and light it is.

Just treat it like a netbook and don't expect it to be a full-powered PC and you'll get along fine with it.

What Dd said. I have one, as a mobile unit you can toss in your backpack they are great. I highly recommend putting an OS there designed for netbooks though. Otherwise oversized windows and shit will really piss you off.

Yea, I'm constantly being reminded of its restrictions. If I'm about to make it explode, it sends me a message telling me that it's a netbook and such and such action is going to be too much for it.
What netbook Os's do you recommend? It came with XP, which it handles well - visually and functionally, but I'm going to install the free Win 7 upgrade provided by the school. I keep meaning to try out Win 7 and now is as good a time as any with this little machine.

Re: Taken By Surprise
A stripped down Linux distro will probably perform better than Windows. If you simply have to use Windows then a stripped version of Win7 is probably your best bet.

Awesome, thanks. I'll look into that in the next few days once Brittany leaves.

Everything I have read indicated that certain netbooks can handle Win 7 Home Premium if you are willing to live with about 1 - 1.5 hours less battery time due to the features of Win7. Most of the netbooks coming with Win7 are coming with Win7 Starter which is only available to OEM's. Most netbooks are sticking with XP.

If you turn off the eye candy from Win7 it should be comparable to XP for battery life, but you're effectively turning Home Premium into Starter by doing it. I'd imagine Aero chews a bunch of power.Kulaf wrote:Everything I have read indicated that certain netbooks can handle Win 7 Home Premium if you are willing to live with about 1 - 1.5 hours less battery time due to the features of Win7. Re: Taken By Surprise
Haha, it may not happen anyway. I'm having trouble mounting the damn ISO. I haven't done it in forever, so I'm probably missing a step as I try to refresh my memory. No idea what I would be missing since the program is fairly click and go and burn. I may just stick 7 on my main. Maybe it's the external drive I've been using? I wish I did this stuff more often to keep my memory going.

I seen someone put ChromeOS on one and it was pretty rockin. Might hold off though cause I think the wireless is still a little difficult. I'm running the Ubuntu Netbook Remix on mine & yeah it's a way faster than xp. I can't imagine trying to run Win7 or Vista on it.

Re: Taken By Surprise
I bought the wife an Acer Aspire One for Xmas. It's a nice little machine and the first thing I did was upgrade the RAM to 2GB and blow off Windows 7 Starter that came with it and install Windows 7 Home Premium. Some people were saying it wasn't powerful enough to run that version of Windows but so far it runs like a champ. Got her a little bluetooth mouse with it and she's a happy camper. It's more powerful than we thought and the battery life is kickass. Only issue so far is it gets a little warm for her lap, so we're going to look into a cooling tray thingy.
It's a very recent purchase so here's a couple of the links:
Her Netbook
(Notice I got her the slightly more powerful processor, larger hard drive and bigger battery that all came with this model.)
The cutsie bluetooth mouse I got for her:
Cutsie Mouse
The memory upgrade - make sure yours takes the DDR2 667 as not all the Acers I looked at did:
2 Gigs of RAM
That's pretty much it for my thoughts. I've been a loyal Acer fan for a while and so far the missus is hooked!
