Halo
I thought this video was hilarious.
I've played all the Halos here, I guess they are coming out with 4 and remaking 1 here soon? Exciting~

Re: Halo
Halo 4 next year probably, Halo: Combat Evolved will be released in November. But note, this remake is not being done by Bungie but the new MS studio who will be handling all Halo projects from this point forward.

orly!? bah. Well... didn't Bungie get absorbed by MS? I wonder if it will be the same group of people but just under the MS label now?xilly wrote:Halo 4 next year probably, Halo: Combat Evolved will be released in November. Re: Halo
That's interesting, for some odd reason I always thought it was the other way around. Then again didn't MS purchase Bungie to keep them from developing on OSX?

Yes, Halo was originally supposed to be Mac only.Falundir X`Viento wrote:Then again didn't MS purchase Bungie to keep them from developing on OSX?

Re: Halo
I think MS purchased them because they needed a first party XBox exclusive that would actually sell the console against the PS2. Had it come out Mac only, it would have bombed no matter how good it was because the Mac hardware at the time was completely crap for games.

Re: Halo
Not really, Dd. That was the heyday of the G4 and the launch of OSX.

Re: Halo
Bungie was purchased by Microsoft in 2000, but when their contracts ran out in 2007 they purchased the company back, and now they will be publishing through Activision/Blizzard although they are an independent company. The Halo IP belongs to Microsoft.

Re: Halo
My point exactly. The G4 wasn't that spectacular compared to the Pentium 4 and the Mac had crap OpenGL performance compared to OpenGL and Direct3D on Windows, especially given the lack of gaming quality video cards that has plagued Macs forever.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:Not really, Dd. Given the Mac was about 2% of the PC market at the time, Halo would have been one of those quaint things that never went anywhere beyond a curiosity. Much like Marathon.

Re: Halo
G4 beat the Pentium 4 to market by over a year, and they didn't get OSX til 6 months after Pentium 4 came out (XP came out ~6 months after that). So PC's clearly won that battle anyway.
You're quite right, though. No one with a hint of sanity used a Mac for gaming and Halo wouldn't have changed that in the slightest, especially since it was to launch on both OS9 and Windows simultaneously and be an entirely different game than it ended up being.
I sometimes miss my old 3DFX Voodoo cards.

Re: Halo
That always intrigues me - the way game studios can completely change the genre of a game during development. Must drive the devs mad.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:and be an entirely different game than it ended up being.

Re: Halo
It changed from a Myst style game to a FPS after Microsoft bought Bungie.
It would drive me absolutely insane if I were working on a big project like that and it just changed in the middle of development and things had to be rewritten from the ground up.

Re: Halo
While the fact it had to be rewritten would drive ya crazy, I'm sure the ensuing success would've been surely acceptable, Fallakin. Haha.

Re: Halo
That's about the last video card I ever got excited about. Since then a video card is just something I need to upgrade when I start playing a game and my frame rate is too low. As long as I can run what I want to run then I don't care what hunk of metal is connected to my motherboard.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:I sometimes miss my old 3DFX Voodoo cards.
Hardware development is so incremental these days that you just don't see many "wow that's badass" moments.

That is the last video card I got excited about. Everything since has been a stream of tech that I'm wholly unexcited about.
The only pieces of hardware I've been excited about since are my SSD and i7 2600k.

Re: Halo
Game development can be very frustrating. You'd be surprised ho many times a game will change dramatically during development. It's a big part of why many games are horribly buggy or just crap because the developer can't stick to one plan and runs out of time and has to release something. It makes the really good games that much more special.
