2011 Road Trip - Cali, Vegas, Tucson

Post by Taxious »

Going on a road trip this coming week with a friend and wondering if you guys had any suggestions on places to visit. Currently we have a very open schedule (which I love) but basically we know we will be driving from Denver --> Vegas --> Souther Cali --> Tucson --> Denver.

We are both interested in any geeky science / video game stuff as well as roller coasters, cool bars/clubs, etc. Any "must see" stuff y'all can think of??

Knott's Berry Farm is the shit, and Medival TImes is right across the street in Buena Park. I also like to visit Charlie's Chili right on the pier in Newport Beach if it's a nice day. Newport beach also has some of the best bars I've ever been to. The Beach Ball is nice and it's right there on the boardwalk, and if you go a little inland there's Goat Hill Tavern, Pier Street Annex and Hoagie Barmichaels which were some of my favorites when I lived there.

Get the "Weird America" book (and "Weird <insert state name here>" ones too if you like). Lots of awesome suggestions you'd miss otherwise.

I've heard this before. Would you say it's the best theme park (for roller coasters) in SoCal?

Yeah it's the best theme park hands down. Make sure to go on Accelerator. It's like being fucking shot out of a gun. I think the whole ride lasts like 20 seconds or something crazy. It's supposed to be the same G force as being a pilot launched off the deck of an aircraft carrier. The magnets pop up, the lights go green, the guy gives the thumbs up and that's the last thing you see clearly!

Wow, will definitely be going there then! I'm thinking we hit that on a Tuesday or something when it's (hopefully) not too busy. I know we are planning on hitting West Hollywood one night, that should be fun and gay.

You'll like Knott's. The only ride that scares me is supreme scream (which I could see from my last backyard) because it slowly pulls you up the height of a skyscraper and you have to look down and you're just kind of dangling there. The last time I went there I was in line with a friend who is a large black man and we both chickened out until some little girl started trash talking us.

"You guys are big men and it's really sad because I'm just a little girl and I'm not scared, so what does that say about you?"

After that we pretty much had to go on the ride. Though me and my friend were the only ones in our party that didn't wimp out on Accelerator.

Oh, and you'll like Hollyweird too. But I doubt you're freakish enough to even get noticed there though lol.

Yeah, probably not. I went to New Orleans a couple weekends ago for Southern Decadence and feel quite desensitized to... everything now. The entire weekend was just insane. I'm really not one to wear rainbows and flounce around, but it sure is fun watching (and participating in some) of the festivities!

My wife's cousin visited us once and he was wearing this cat in the hat top-hat, he had a long flowing pink beard and these sharpened, black fingernails with huge ornate rings and he was a little upset on his trip to So. Cal. that nobody even looked twice at him. One freak in a sea of freaks lol.

I would say that Magic Mountain is better for thrill rides and roller coasters. You can always just go look at both web sites and decide which looks better to you.

If you haven't been to Vegas before you should try and get downtown to see the Fremont Street Experience. It's a big light show sorta thing that's pretty impressive. Other than that the downtown area is kinda meh. http://www.vegasexperience.com/#/home/

There's also a lot of cool stuff to see on the strip. There's quite a few rooftop roller coasters and other rides. http://www.vegas.com/attractions/thrillrides.html

The pinball museum is pretty interesting if you're into that sort of thing. http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

Wow, what a fun trip! We ended up staying in vegas an extra night because we were having so much fun. I didn't end up sleeping in the hotel room the first night anyway. :D

I didn't check out West Hollywood. We got into the city and realized that we wanted to get out ASAP. Ugh, why would anyone live in LA? Pretty nasty IMO. San Diego on the other hand was beautiful!! I realized I'm way too small town country hic to ever live in Cali, but if I were to ever move there it'd be for San Diego.

We had very bad luck with roller coasters. The few we wanted to do in Vegas were down for maintenance. (after practically sprinting 2 miles down the strip to catch it before it closed) Knotts Berry Farm was a lot of fun, but their main coaster (the accelerator) was closed the day we were there. However, it was pretty sweet to have no lines for any of the other rides!
