Re: Prometheus
Well I just got back from seeing Prometheus and it left me sort of flat. It is a visually stunning movie. It is beautiful to look at. Unfortunatly it has no tension, no character development and glaring plot holes. The music in the movie was TOTALLY uninspired and did not set any tension. Dramatic scenes were filmed from too far away. There were lines used in the movie that seemed to come from nowhere and never tie in to anything other than what I assume is laying on the cutting room floor. Whomever edited this movie should just pack it in.
That said......it was at least worth the price of admission for the stunning visuals.

Re: Prometheus
So, here's my long-arse response.....
I love to see Weyland-Yutani being the a**hole corporation we all know and love. Funny, Charlize Theron's character seems the bitch at first, when all she was doing was humoring her father's Disney-esque obsession with immortality.
**Then again, maybe she really was an android, created by Weyland and made "too human" in some aspects?
On this being a prequel or not.....
In Alien, the crew of the Nostromo are called to LV-426 due to a distress signal, correct? If we're in the same "universe" as Prometheus, couldn't LV-426 be one planet that Dr. Shaw and David visited on their quest to find the engineers' beginnings? Obviously leaving something nasty behind them. We're not sure what at this point. Xenomorph prototype could have retained some of the engineer's memories or such (same as the geologist seemed to have retained a bit of himself). Or, Dr. Shaw might have had other infestations within her. Or, David might have brought something along just to study. Nobody knows, but I think there are many valid possibilities.
What struck me was that the xenomorph prototype still didn't look like our beloved alien. Not yet. Close. It could mean more transformation is in store.
Considering that Weyland Y is run by gigantic, greedy douchebags, the idea that they would send someone to follow up on the Prometheus is 100% plausible. They find the bodies, maybe find the final recording of Dr. Shaw. Fast forward to Alien when the ship detours to check out a distress call, Weyland Y isn't exactly going to fess up to what's happened previously. That's "classified" after all. Ahh to hack into the W.Y. archives. Imagine what fun that would be.
Maybe someone else knows, but the xenomorph . . . has it stayed consistent in all the Alien movies? Or, has it evolved? I don't think it's changed. We might be introduced to different types (the queen) or whatnot as movies go on, but in Alien(s) 1-4, they infest, utilize hosts and whatnot for procreation, not for species evolution.
In Prometheus, it seems they change as they are introduced to different types of DNA. There has to be a point where it stops, right? Perhaps when the creature reaches full potential (whatever that is)?
On Ancient Aliens. My husband and I had different ideas about where the movie began. He thought that the "engineer" they showed in the beginning was on the "alien" planet and that's how the plague or whatnot began there, causing the engineers to flee. I thought that was Earth (or another Earth-like planet), where the aliens dropped off one dude, had him committ suicide so that his DNA would be sprinkled across the planet and help to move humans into the next phase of evolution (the missing link).
Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but I am quite fond of the mythology surrounding the alien franchise (and by that I mean Alien and Aliens. Everthing beyond is just not the same, imho, nor should be considered part of the Alien-verse). It's kind of like reading the Silmarillion after reading the Lord of the Rings just to get some interesting lore.
The only thing that truly bothered me was when David was insisting that Dr. Shaw be put into cryo-freeze and the whole pregnancy thing. Sure, David would absolutely do such a thing (he is, after all, a Weyland android and one must get the specimens to the big corporation). But, where the heck was everyone else? Nobody seemed to bat an eyelash at that whole sequence ("I'm preggo" to self-alien-removal). It felt like there was a scene missing.
Liked it. Didn't LOVE it. Was entertained. I need to watch it again. I felt like I missed some things. I feel like it has potential in the sequel.
Was it just me, or were the scientists not acting like scientists? They seemed to be bungling all over everything, especially in the first "pod" room. I'm not sure on specifics as to how they were super un-scientific, but even as a total scientific illiterate, I sensed something was off in that regard.

They were very unscientific. Ohh the air registers as breathable......I'll just remove my helmet. Surely they are no nasty airborn pathogens I might need to worry about on this alien world!

Re: Prometheus
It was visually awesome, the movie was just "okay". I enjoyed it, but I definitely wasn't feeling *WHOA* about it. I also felt the scientists were super sloppy - seriously, removing their helmets like that seemed ridiculous. How they dealt with or basically ignored her pregnancy and surgery seemed odd, like Allu said, like a scene or two were missing. Also, the engineer towards the end that they woke up seemed very caveman and brutish to me. I would have expected it to be more cunning and sublte. I don't know, he/it just seemed a little too HULK SMASH!

Re: Prometheus
Yeah, he was very "Hulk SMASH!" But, he was, imho, pretty badass. I think he underestimated the humans. Maybe he thought of them as insects to be crushed beneath his boot.
What's interesting is that it was David's DNA that "woke" the pods, right? I get that he's a synthetic human, but hmmmm. I wonder if that factors into the whole DNA thing.
I just read somewhere that there are 30 minutes of extra footage that was cut. That could explain some of the plot holes.
A friend pointed out to me that in Alien 3, the Xenomorph:
1. Has a human skeleton when X-rayed.
2. Looked more like a dog when it infested and broke out of the dog.
3. Are typical xenomorphs when they host in humans.
Could be that they do continue to evolve, but I'm reluctant to take anything as canon from Alien 3 and beyond. Cameron knew to revere the Alien-verse. The other blokes didn't, imho.

Re: Prometheus
I really liked the movie. I'm pretty much on board with any sci-fi horror, and Prometheus was beautiful. A little too "wtf is going on" at times, but maybe they wanted you to feel like one of the crew in that regard. The alien abortion part... wth?
In the beginning of Alien, don't they find that crashed ship with the pilot seat exactly how it looks when the engineer is about to take off near the end of the movie? A friend pointed out that they did show the worms in the soil before the black stuff started oozing out, which probably evolved into those vagina snakes that broke the guy's arm. He also saw a picture of Predator in that room that I must have missed.

Not sure about the space jockey, Tax. I do want to watch Alien again. I saw Aliens recently, but not the first.

Re: Prometheus
I actually really liked Alien Resurrection too. The 3rd one in the series is shit, but why all the hate on the 4th?

Re: Prometheus
I don't think they pay proper homage to the original alien-universe, I guess. The fact that they offed Newt and Hicks for the 3rd film pissed me off so entirely that I guess I never recovered.
As for 4, maybe it was the Winona Ryder thing. She kind of grates on my nerves in a really weird, way.

Seems like everyone is reviewing it as 'meh'. Probably partially due to the amount of hype that it couldn't possibly have lived up to. Still haven't seen it, but considering all the reviews I think I'll wait for the blu-ray

I dunno, Minute, it's a visually stunning film. I'd see it at the cheap seats at least.

Shit like Brometheus is why I'm such a sour cynic when it comes to movies.
Everything is fine and dandy til about halfway through the movie. I don't need to really explain too much. I mean, is this the same guy and vfx company that brought us fucking Blade Runner? Ridley Scott can take his shitty scifis and his shitty robin hood movie and shove them up his ass.

Avengers turned out to be the better movie, and it pains me to say that. *Sips can of pepsi, label facing camera*

I knew that this was going to be a movie about a doomed mission.
But god damn, it became Gilligin's Island.
