I thought it was okay, better than Spiderman 3, but not better than the previous two. I felt Toby Maguire was a better Peter Parker overall - but the dancing scene in 3 was so lame, I was open to a rebooting of this series. Maybe after the awesomeness of The Avengers, I'm too hard to please right now, but this was just a modestly enjoyable film to me. It had weird pacing during the second half (it felt like a slow build to a very fast resolution).
So if you want to see it, I think the theater is the place to enjoy it and the great special effects. But I honestly don't think the story is worth a dvd rental though.

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man
Okay, we saw it today. Maybe my expectations were low, but I frickin' loved this movie. I actually am going to go opposite of Harlowe which is weird because I'm usually pretty matchy-matchy with her on reviews.
I thought this Peter Parker had far more dimension and depth than MacGuire's version. I thought this version altogether had a heck of a lot more heart. I did find the villain a bit less interesting than Doc Oc or even the Green Goblin, but I felt they made up for that in other ways (characterization of Peter Parker, for example). They weren't afraid to go a little darker with Spiderman. I loved his character arc how he went from discovery to utter guilt/vigilante to realization that he had to become what he had to become. It was far more powerful in this version, imho, then Raimi's.
I liked Gwen Stacy a lot more than Kristen Dunst's red-headed what'sherface character in the previous versions. God, she was so much better.
I am not familiar with the comic books, so I'm no judge there, but I just got more of an emotional punch out of this one and I like how they left it open for more to happen. No idea who the next villain will be. Maybe someone in Oscorp. Who knows.
I felt the pacing was okay, but I'm cool with some downtime and slower buildup as long as there is character building and such going on. It's hard to compare the two on some levels. On other levels (like female leads), it's pretty easy. With Tobi VS Andrew, I like this guy better, hands down. I felt that is Tobi had been given more thoughtfully written material to work with we could have seen this the first time around, but he wasn't. The writing and acting made this Spiderman far more interesting to me, more human, more tortured and tragic.
Interested to see what others have to say. Glad I saw it, though.
One thing it did remind me of is that there really are no good female comic book movies. None. They all suck major ass. Why is that?

Loved it? Everyone I've talked to was just "meh" about it. Not bad, not great either. I'm not wasting my money. Holding out for Batman

Re: The Amazing Spider-Man
I know, I was really surprised that I liked it as much as I did. I almost had that old school Superman feel to it for me. I don't know. I cared a lot more about this Spiderman than the Raimi version. Garfield's performance just nailed it for me (not the one-liners or the humor, but the really vulnerable, tortured moments in there).
I do agree with Harlowe that the effects were fucking insane awesome and had I not liked the story, would have been enough for me in terms of the ticket pricing. But, I can be an effects ho.

If you want to pull a heroine out of Marvel or DC and put them onscreen, you're not going to find much stock in the A-list that's going to provide more than just T&A.Alluveal wrote: One thing it did remind me of is that there really are no good female comic book movies. Unless you think Meryl Streep would be a good wonder-woman...

Probably for the same reason there were no female leads in computer games. The genre was mostly read by boys and men so the main characters were designed to be relateable. Except for Wonder Woman, who was designed by a psychologist. Very interesting story if you've never heard it.

A psychologist who had some bondage issues. She got tied up with her own golden rope more than Batman lets the Joker live.
Anyway. I didn't see this new Spiderman cuase I'm waiting for the 27th reboot next week. I hear it's going to have Sean Connery as the Vulture. An old man who can fly. He can fly, but is as strong as an old man.
