Romney's Secret Video

Post by Harlowe »

http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-hab ... 35786.html

Besides the sneering about how he feels about 47% of Americans....
My dad, as you probably, know was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company. But he was born in Mexico... and, uh, had he been born of, uh, Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this," Romney said. "But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico.... I mean I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."

Here are the source articles by David Corn (part one, part two) with more video clips and commentary.

Here's at article by Ezra Klein with details about the 47% who don't pay federal income taxes.

He thinks Syria borders the West Bank. Someone wanting to be President, who also has a stubborn belief with regard to a volatile, complicated situation (Palestine doesn't want peace EVAH), should probably know more shit about that area, mebbe.

Ha! Now Drudge has lept to Romney's defense by posting a statement Obama made in 1998.
Obama - 1998 wrote:I think that what we're going to have to do is resuscitate the notion that government action can be effective at all. There has been a systematic — I don't think it's too strong to call it a propaganda campaign — against the possibility of government action and its efficacy. And I think some of it's been deserved. Chicago Housing Authority has not been a model of good policy-making and neither, necessarily, have been the Chicago public schools.

What this means, then, is that we try to resuscitate this notion that we're all in this together, leave nobody behind, we do have to be innovative in thinking what are the delivery systems that are actually effective and meet people where they live. And my suggestion, I guess, would be that the trick — and this is one of the few areas I think that there are technical issues that need to be dealt with as opposed to just political issues — I think the trick is figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources, and hence facilitate some redistribution, because I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure that everybody's got a shot.

Wow that is about a useless fucking chart.

How about we restructure that by state population and see how that falls out.

Top ten states by population (more electoral votes) 8 Blue, 2 red.
CA - Blue 37%
TX - Red 39%
FL - Blue 39%
IL - Blue 34%
PA - Blue 32%
OH - Blue 32%
MI - Blue 36%
GA - Red 41%
NC - Blue 38%
NJ - Blue 30%

You do the math. But as a percentage of the U.S. population I think the 47% actually live disproportionally in Blue states, thanks.

Oh, the comment Fox, Romney and Drudge all dug out from 14 years ago that no one cared about in 2008 either? That'll surely detract from his dismal performance even people on the same team are embarrassed by. Deflection fail.

Americans embarrass me, mostly when they get the idea in their head that welfare is a 50k+ a year proposition and you can get away with not working forever. Reagan's strapping young bucks and Cadillac Queens again.

What costs the tax payer 128 billion per year? SSI disability payments. Care to tell us again how you can't get away with not working forever?

I went to see Sherman Alexie speak tonight. If you don't know who Sherman Alexie is, then go slap yourself in the face and get busy reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Alexie

Notable works include the screenplay for "Smoke Signals" (movie), Tonto and the Lone Ranger Fistfight in Heaven (short stories), and "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian."

So, Alexie is awesome funny and he's talking about being born to two alcoholic parents who were dirt poor, AND, having a horrible condition (water on the brain). They couldn't get any real medical care on the reservation so he went undiagnosed until he was injured and taken to the ER. The doctors told his parents that he would probably die, or, if he did survive surgery, that he'd be a vegetable.

Also born with 42 teeth and had to have 10 removed . . . all at once.

Tonight he said this, "There I was, 7 years old, born with hydrocephalus, walking the rez, having three seizures a day, 42 teeth in my head, just waiting for the government to take care of me. I was part of the 47%. Fuck you, Mitt Romney."

I just had to share that. :) Got a standing ovation.

Let's not lose sight of who the 47% who don't pay federal income taxes are, and why the wingnut propaganda attacking them is so offensive. More details here and here.
Breakdown3-06-17-11.gif
53.6 percent of households pay the federal income tax. Presumably Romney is okay with these folks.

28.3 percent of households pay no federal income tax, but they do pay the payroll taxes for Social Security and Medicare. That means they don’t need Mitt Romney to convince them to “take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” They already have jobs.

Most of the households in this group don’t pay any federal income tax because they qualify for enough deductions that their income tax liability has shrunk to zero. See this Tax Policy Center report for more, which gives an example of “a couple with two children earning less than $26,400. They get an $11,600 standard deduction and four exemptions of $3,700, and that takes their liability to zero.” Indeed, it’s worth noting that many of these deductions and credits were part of the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, which Romney wants to extend.

10.3 percent of households pay no federal income tax because they’re retired and elderly. Many retirees aren’t taxed on their Social Security benefits, which they earned by paying into the system over many years. If Mitt Romney secretly thinks that these households are all irresponsible freeloaders, he has a weird way of showing it, as he keeps insisting that he doesn’t want to cut Medicare or Social Security benefits for those over the age of 65.

— That leaves 6.9 percent of households which are non-elderly and have incomes less than $20,000 per year and aren’t paying the payroll tax. These poorer households pay neither income taxes nor payroll taxes. Perhaps Romney thinks that they should all pay more in federal taxes. It’s hard to say. But this is also a much smaller fraction of Americans.
