Not madness at all, just pure corporate greed. They want you to be using their controlled subscription streaming media servers and verification tools - iTunes without the ability to import external material.

I didn't say it was going to work; just that it has a very obvious point.

And, well, Apple did pay the music industry $3.4 billion in royalties in 2012, which means they did north of $5 billion dollars, largely to devices that are (unsuccessfully) locked to annoyingly proprietary software. Netflix is over a billion a year. Yeah, they're targeting proven business models. The only question is if the backlash from presuming every prior piece of media is pirated will cost more than they'll make from new subscriptions and repurchase.

I'd disagree with the analogy. Apple was successful because they allowed external media - iPods with no ability to import your own mp3s would have died very quickly. Netflix relies on third party hardware to deliver and doesn't require a "Netflix-only box".

I would say that the most successful players in the field embrace the competition and provide a better service on their delivery lines.

The PlayStation 4 launched in North America on November 15th. Since then, it’s gone on to launch in 32 countries around the world.

Sony announced this morning that the PlayStation 4 has just beaten 2,100,00 consoles sold globally. That’s not shipped to stores, that’s actually sold to buyers at retail.

According to MCV's retail sources, the PlayStation 4 sold 250k units in its first 48 hours on sale. This means sales total somewhere in the region of £87 million.

Sony's PlayStation 4 has become the fastest-selling console in UK history, according to official sales from Chart-Track.

The PS4 broke the record by Sony's PlayStation Portable, which sold 185,000 when it came out in 2005. The PS4 not only surpassed sales of Xbox One, which came out on November 22nd, but also PlayStation 3.

For comparison, the Xbox One sold approximately 150,000 units in the first 48 hours. The PlayStation 3 sold 165,000 units over a similar amount of time.

I have no desire to get a new console. The only reason I play my xbox anymore is for split screen action and it seems like they are phasing this type of game play out more and more. PC gaming it is!

Why is the PS4 outselling the Xbox One? Microsoft weighs in
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/why-is ... 0-6419622/
With more than 7 million units sold to date, Sony's PlayStation 4 is the top-selling new console, ahead of Microsoft's Xbox One, which has shipped (not sold) 5 million units to date. In an interview with Forbes, Microsoft chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Mehdi laid out some reasons why his console is lagging behind, at least right now.

"It's hard to really assess the gap in sales," Mehdi said. "[Sony is] in many more markets right now than we are. They're in 40+ markets, we're in 13." The PS4 won't have a such a dramatic regional availability advantage for much longer, as the Xbox One will be released in Japan and 25 other regions in September.

Another reason why the Xbox One has fallen behind the PS4 in terms of sales so far is because, according to Mehdi, Xbox 360 owners enjoy their systems more than PlayStation 3 owners do, so they are less inclined to upgrade.

"People have been more satisfied with the Xbox 360 than the PS3, so in that respect people have less of a need to upgrade in the short-term due to regular updates for the Xbox 360," Mehdi said. "We could point to any number of things."
