EverQuest Next - Landmark Alpha

Post by Robyn the Ranger »

If anyone gives two shits, etc, feel free to follow me through the EverQuest Next Landmark Alpha on the little Facebook page I made for it. The NDA has been lifted and we're allowed to speak openly about the game. Other than that, howdy folks!

You have to pay $100 to be in the alpha to test the game for them?? This isn't even EQN, but the sim-city like landmark portion of the game where you are making the levels for them too, correct? Crayz.

With that being said, the pictures on your facebook do look pretty good! I'm excited to play actual EQN but I think I have a year or so to wait.

You have to buy the game to play. You can pay for 2 versions of the game that allow you access into the otherwise closed alpha if you choose to. And SOE has added a money back guarantee that if you don't enjoy the alpha, they will refund your money.

Personally I don't care about being in the alpha, but if you were going to buy the Founders pack anyway.....you get in.

Well, I went and did it.

Only got to being in it for a hour but let me tell you. I dug some epic holes in ground.

I wish trees fell over instead of exploded once you chopped all the resources of of them.

Is it playable in terms of speed and such? Or does it suck giant big one like EQ2?

I purchased the $100 Founders Pack, dont regret it at all. I love building, sim, economy games tho. Have no idea what the microtransation system will look like on launch, but the 2 week 20% resource bonus potion they give is outstanding and the 2-3 day headstart they plan on having so you can grab your claim first will be worth it. I was a little worried seeing what the graphics and movement system would be like after watching the videos they put out, but it actually looks great and moving around is quite a bit of fun, expecially with the grappling hook.

Those worried about us creating all the content for Next? That will be hardly the case. Its a great strategy to get the player base to help you create content as there are some truly creative and talented people out there that will never have the opportunity any other way to influence a game. They will also be having contests for things they want to put into the game and this is a great way to get free content and player interaction. The information on the interaction between the two games is limited, but I would assume we would be able to transfer assets between them for player and guild housing in Next. Also, supposedly the character we are playing now will be the Adventurer class in Next (rumor).

Currently working on a recreation of the Necro/SK guildhall in Neriak 3rd Gate.

Oh my god. Carpla tunnel syndrome!!! Even with altering my mouse commands for easier gathering of resources my mouse hand just told me to stop of it will kill itself.

Still goofing on making a proper tower. Got enough templates saved to be about 3/4 done of a proper WoW style tower.

Closed beta is coming March 26th and since I have no friends  who wants a beta code? Got two to hand out. They originally only lasted a week but SOE has made them permanent.

My impressions so far from a person who is really not a builder.

The UI leaves a lot to be desired. The camera seems very unresponsive. The character models are very nicely done. The mining is cool, but the wood harvesting is kind of boring. There is not much to do in the game right now but harvest materials and construct things. There are no NPC's at all. There is no tutorial at all to offer you pointers on what you should be doing. There is no currency in the game atm.

Basically it is everything you expect to see in a "closed" beta, and I use that term loosely as this is really an open beta that you can pay to get access to. The only reason I bought it was to see the character models and be able to eventually start EQN with the Adventurer class already under my belt. I have no aspirations to be a building modeler.

Actually I do have another. The co-worker that I was going to give it to went top grade asshole on me and tried to blame me for his screw up.

Will send it in a moment once I pull up the email. Watch you PM.

I've spent a night in there thus far. Was impressed with the visuals and controls. Mining is fun, Harvesting wood is just like chopping real wood (boring). I haven't really started building or anything, I spent a few hours working on upgrading my tiers of tools.
