Rust
I know it's only in Alpha but has anyone played this game yet? I never got into Day Z as zombies aren't really my thing. Rust is apparently Day Z with a few changes and no zombies. Everything is player built, etc. and it really seems to thrive on the idea of a fully multiplayer ideal.
I thought it looked pretty cool and have heard pretty positive responses from those that bought the Alpha on Steam.

Re: Rust
Day Z finally made it to Steam as a real release & there's actually considerably less zombies than there were in the mod. They figured out that what makes Day Z so good is the All-Or-Nothing of it. When people REALLY care about dying it completely changes the game. I think it's a wonderful concept & hope that the money they got rolling in now is spent on making the game/movements less sucktastic because there is a lot of potential there.
I like the idea of Rust. It steps further towards my dream game of completely starting from base nothing & having to move up. My bitch about it is that it progresses a too fast. I mean, stick me on an island with nothing but a loin cloth & it's gonna take me a bit before I'm building guns & shit. In Rust I can be there in like a day. I hope that they take a hint from the Day Z (and even old time EQ) folks & realize that catering to the insta-gratification fuckos that almost ALL games do is a fail, and that there is a huge market to be found in keeping people working for what they get.

Re: Rust
I pretty much agree with everything you've said Minute. I have a feeling that Rust will cut down on the instant gratification bullshit once they actually hit release. I hope anyway, that the game is just sped up currently so that they could test things. The instant gratification crew actually serves a purpose in that regard. I'm probably gonna buy it just to mess around and see what it's like. I really like the idea of a completely player made world. I'm told right now servers are only about 100 people each, which is a little disappointing. It makes me think that the 'game world' itself is probably pretty small. Ideally, I'd like to see a big world for something like that, with so much potential.

Re: Rust
Was bored last night so I picked this up on Steam. It is very easy to get to the moderate stages. Having said that, the game (or at least the server I'm on) is just pure KoS. If you see a person, you kill them or they kill you. There is no diplomacy at all. Which is kinda cool, but also really annoying.
I'm on my fourth house now. First one was going great and I'd managed to get myself a shotgun and 9mm revolver, as well as armor and all the amenities to advance. Then of course, I got raided, despite placing in it a ridiculously obscure and out of the way location. Had to start over from scratch with a rock.
That gets really frustrating. You can lose everything so quickly. While it adds an element of excitement, in terms of practical gameplay, you can only rebuild so many times from scratch without it becoming tedious.

I like that they have a public Trello board (https://trello.com/b/lG8jtz6v/rust). You can vote on whatever you think they should work on next, and looks like comment on stuff too.

Re: Rust
This review was pretty funny & spot on. He mentions in both 7D2D & Rust that within just a few moments you're armed to the teeth with a nearly infinite amount of guns. I've always equated games that gave you too much without working for it to entering cheat codes. For the first few moments it's fun, but it very quickly loses all appeal. As much as people bitch about having to 'grind' for things, it keeps the games interesting as it gives you something to look forward to. Granted, they have a tendency to fail by making the grind consist of doing extremely repetitive things, but I would hope that our game developers are learning.

Re: Rust
I dunno what that dude is talking about being 'armed to the teeth' in 20 mins, Minute. I've had servers where I go 5 days, next to a rad town and still don't have an M4, Bolt Action Rifle or shotgun. In other words, I don't have any of the guns that actually might give me a chance in hell of surviving kevlar wearing players (in over 100 hours played, I still have never managed to get a full suit of kevlar). I've also never had a server where I didn't get my home found and destroyed within 3 days of making it.
What he says about not dying again to NPCs is true. The content is purely player driven and needs some retuning. The fact that everyone gets their house reasonably built-up, ammo/weapons reasonably stocked up and then goes; "Okay, guess I go kill people now" is a problem. You reach the 'end game' after a week or two (depending on play time) and then you go and fuck up anybody who hasn't reached that point. Which would be fine, if players couldn't hit the 'reset' button on you at 4 in the morning while you're sleeping, putting you back to square 1.

Re: Rust
I have put almost 300 hours into the game since I heard about it (taking a break for Landmark). I play with a couple friends and within a day we can all have fll kevlar, M4's, ect.. They have already said they plan on either removing military weapons or making them extremely rare and hard to attain. I play on alot of the "Hardcore" servers where you cant craft M4's and Shotguns, and C4 is bottle necked by extremely rare flares. Game plays out the same as normal servers after the first week or two of uptime, then its usually time for a wipe.

Re: Rust
Yeah, the thing I've found is that you have to have a group of friends or you can't hope to compete. I gave up on the game, after 120-ish hours just because as someone who likes to do shit solo, this game isn't viable. The only alternative is to go to a nearly dead server (less than 30 people at peak times) and then it's just kinda boring.

Re: Rust
Yeah. I do hope the game moves more towards the survival side of it, which is entertaining, and less to the FPS side, which is pretty shitty. Has a lot of potential, but too much too fast. If I woke up on an island in my unders, you can bet I wouldn't have a fucking uzi & glock by the end of the day. As said before, if you don't have something to work for, the game gets boring. It's like typing in a cheat code. Fun at first, but soon Zzz...
