New Book Series?

Post by Minute »

Don't say WoT.

I just finished burning through all 6 of Joe Ambercrombie's & the 2 from Patrick Rothfuss.

Joe Ambercrombie is so fucking badass. I seriously wish he could magically dish out a new book per week. Man those are great.

Rothfuss's Kingkiller series is pretty good too. The 1st one was better than the 2nd, but he's apparently taking a long ass vacation or something because it's been forever.

Anywho, someone give me a good series to start. Even if it's just the start of a good series & the first book happens to be good.

Abercrombie is so badass it's not even funny. I loved that series (the end of the first trilogy was kinda... meh) and especially Logan. He might've been one of my favourite characters of all time. Him, The Dogman and Shivers were all really well written, though Shivers kinda turns into a pussy sometimes.

I'm gonna throw out the Emperor or Conqueror series' by Conn Iggulden. It's historical fiction, so you probably know the outcomes (Caesar/Ghengis) but both series are incredibly well written and very interesting. They gave me a lot of insight into those two historical figures while still being a very good read. I'd highly recommend them.

I love Abercrombie. I actually studied the shit out of his battle/fight scenes because I feel like he nails those. And as a writer, fight scenes are a fucking nightmare to write.

The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence? I'm on Emperor of Thorns at the moment.

The series I'm starting next are -
The Riyria Revelations series Michael Sullivan (starts with Theft of Swords) and The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch - starts with Lies of Locke Lamora.

Oh and I love the Robin Hobb Farseer Trilogy. I'm not sure it's your cup of tea, but it starts with Assassin's Apprentice. Then after that trilogy, you can go into the Liveship Traders trilogy and then the Tawny Man Trilogy. There is also a Rain Wild's chronicles that takes place in the same realm but is not a part of the series, though I haven't read those books. I'm waiting for the Fitz & The Fool trilogy she's just started, which should pick up where the Tawny Man Trilogy ended, the first book is supposed to be out in August.

The Riyria series is one of the best reads I have had in a long time. It takes a lot for me to throw my arms in the air and go WOOT at plot points. Highly recommend it.

I am just finishing up The Farseer trilogy....again. This time on audiobook because work is boring. I only remember tiny bits of the story when I read it the first time like 10 years ago. It's the only good thing I can think of about having a really bad memory. Seems to be getting worse. Well on another positive note, a few more year and I will be able to start hiding my own Easter eggs.

Also try reading The Death Gate Cycle. Loved that series also.

I enjoyed the Farseer trilogy, but I don't think it'd be Minute's cup of tea. That series is extremely slow going. It's like Lord of the Rings, without the battles. From what I remember (its been a few years) it was kinda dull. It's like the polar opposite of Abercrombie's style. I try to avoid recommending it for just that reason. I had a few friends who just hated it.

I read the trilogy & enjoyed it. It just pissed me off that there was no real ending. It seemed like it just setup the 'universe' for other books. Which you can do with a Trilogy, but you can't have it based around a central character so much. Abercrombie's universe worked that way because there was no main central character. This one was based so much around Fitz that when it ended, everything else just sort of left me thinking "Ok great, but now back to Fitz".

Wiki says that the author recommends reading them in published order, but... Chronological sounds better. What do you recommend?

It isn't required that you read them in chronological order. Yes it would fill in some spaces left if you read them in their printed order BUT not knowing those things just seemed to add a little more mystery to our adventures.

I read them in their printed order and didn't robbed of anything when reading The Crown Tower and The Rose and the Thorn last.

Hey Minute the Tawny Man trilogy continues the Fitz and the Fool storyline, and she's working on a new one with them in it as well. Liveship Traders is a trilogy in-between, but it doesn't have Fitz and the Fool in it - I skipped it entirely my first pass through the series. I did the same thing Kliban did, read it and then got it on audiobook to listen to at work.

It starts with Fool's Errand (then Golden Fool and Fool's Fate). I was glad that the FItz storyline didn't end with the first trilogy, because like you, I didn't find the ending very satisfying. The third Fitz-Fool trilogy is supposed to start with a book in November - The Fool's Assassin.

She did a book signing at a tiny sci-fi fantasy bookshop here and I had about 6 books signed. I was nerdly enough to be the first person in line.

I might have to try and read that second Fitz/Fool trilogy again. I tried before, but it didn't grab me. They kinda lost me with the 'replacement' in the second trilogy. I don't think I ever finished the first book. I'll have to give it another shot at some point.

I've heard people say that you are a bit lost if you don't read the Liveship trilogy first, so I'm going to attempt it, but the idea of sentient ships didn't really grab me so I was going to listen to them.

If I remember correctly there is only the briefest exchange between characters of the Live Ship and Farseer/Fitz. Lasting only a chapter or two. Could be wrong, it has been awhile.
