free to play since 06/12/2013

Trion Worlds has just announced that fantasy MMO RIFT will be headed free-to-play on June 12th. Though former studio reps were once adamant that the game would remain a subscription MMO, the team has apparently decided it can better compete in a F2P world by being F2P. The hybrid model will include an optional sub with fully free content like dungeons and questing; consumables, cosmetics, and even gear will make up the cash shop.

FAQ
When is RIFT going free-to-play?
June 12 with the arrival of Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault, which also brings a new zone, Chronicle, raid, and more!

Why is RIFT going free-to-play?
Because players prefer free games! Trion has always been progressive with the way we've let people access RIFT, offering trials and referral offers since shortly after launch, Return to Telara events where we invited players to come back for free to see what they missed, partnerships with companies like Raptr, iGames, and others. Over the last two years, we've seen the online gaming market evolve and expand, with millions of new players in North America and Europe embracing free-to-play games. This is just the latest evolution of RIFT that will allow us to bring even more players into the world of Telara.

Why is RIFT going free-to-play now?
Because we believe the game, the market, and players are ready for the transition.

Is there still a subscription? What does it offer?

Yes! Subscribers will be known as Patrons and receive a host of special benefits and abilities:

+15% Currency (always on)
+10% Mount Speed (always on)
Daily Boost Set: Each day you can activate bonuses to the Experience, Notoriety, Favor, Prestige and Tokens you earn while playing.
Daily Summons: Instant access to your banker, guild banker, and trainer. You'll receive access to these convenience features on a set cooldown.

I'm currently a subscriber, what will this mean for me?
You'll receive all Patron benefits shown above and experience all the epic fun in RIFT you've come to expect across every character you create.

What do I get with Patron Pass?
Patron Passes give you access to the benefits of a subscription for a set amount of time. They are available for purchase via the in-game RIFT Store in 3, 15, and 30 day durations.

What do I get for purchasing the original RIFT box and the Storm Legion expansion?
Both the RIFT and Storm Legion products grant permanent unlocks to your account. Owning the base game will open extra character and bag slots, while Storm Legion will unlock the expansion Souls (Harbinger, Tempest, Tactician, and Defiler). Check out the table above for details.

How is the game going to be different after the change?
It's not! You can play free or add subscription benefits, but the game itself hasn't changed. Constant development and updates will continue. We're only changing the business model, not the heart of the game or the philosophy behind the game design that makes it so much fun.

Will there be a cash shop?
Yes – clicking the cart icon in the lower UI will open the RIFT Store! Many things will be available for both in-game gold and Credits.

What are Credits?
Credits are a game currency purchased with real money via the RIFT Store or through the Trion Worlds Account Center. Credits can be used to buy many items in RIFT.

What will be available at the RIFT Store?
Mounts, gear, boosts, companion pets, expansion Souls, services, and more.

Can I gift items to my friends?
Yes! When purchasing an item, if it has a gift button next to it, you may choose to gift it to any other player.

How will the Loyalty program work?
We'll be discussing the Loyalty program in detail over the coming weeks.

What is REX?
REX is an item that can be purchased with real money, which can be traded and sold in-game amongst players, and can be exchanged for Credits and Loyalty. We'll be going into more detail about REX in the coming weeks.

What does REX stand for?
RIFT Exchange.

Are you going to change the free-to-play offerings for RIFT in the future?
As with all of the features we add to RIFT, we will continue to make changes to the game based on feedback from our players. It's an ongoing process!

Yeah it is ok. I have a 54 mage on Seastone named Trebloc.

It is an odd game. Pvp is pretty dead, mages heal, and you can store player specs that remind me a little of SWG. You can change your character subtype at the click of a button (healing vs dps mage for example). And you can't really go afk anywhere because random rifts or invasions or events can pop up and kill you.

We played it at launch and it was probably the only smooth MMO launch I've ever seen. It came polished out of the gate. Impressive. It's very well done. But the game got a little boring after a while, though. It wasn't released with much content and the novelty of the rifts wears off after a while. We lost interest after about 2 months of play time and cancelled our subs. I'm not sure if FTP would bring us back. The rifts can be fun, but they're very repetitive.

My "grumble" was having a level 30+ rift drop in on a level 15-ish zone while I was trying to quest grind xp.

It was a really smooth launch with some unique classes. F2P might bring back some interest for me, depending on how they choose to lock it up.

At first that was fun because higher levels would always come and help you out, and you'd get much better loot. But after a while people lost interest and having a high level rift just meant you got your ass kicked and had to go somewhere else.

Exactly! It was fun for a short-run, but I was honestly losing interest before this started happening.

game is now free to play

The biggest change in 2.3 for old & new players alike is the release of Free-to-Play. With our pledge to have no trials, no tricks, and no traps we’re doubling down on our commitment to provide an awesome gaming experience first.

You’ll be able to browse the in-game RIFT Store and purchase Credits to buy or gift all-new Wardrobe items, mounts, services (weapon appearance change & Faction Change are just two!), and conveniences like XP boosts – in fact, there are nearly 5,000 items or services available to choose from!

The best part is though – you won’t find any paywalls in RIFT, when we say free we mean FREE. All of the levels, content, & features of RIFT are yours to enjoy forever, at no extra cost.

What’s more is that we’ve even made it possible for a player to earn EVERYTHING in RIFT at no cost at all – using REX, short for RIFT Exchange, you can sell or trade Store Credits for in-game currency. It’s pretty simple:

Player A purchases a REX for real money in the RIFT Store.
Player A receives the REX in their inventory.
Player A sells or trades their REX to Player B in-game; Player B then consumes the REX and gets Store Credits to buy cool stuff.
Everybody wins!

It’s important to note – REX cannot be exchanged for Credits or real money.

With Free-to-Play, a subscription is no longer required. Instead, a subscription gives you awesome ‘Patron’ perks like bonus XP, Favor & Prestige; faster mount speeds; even a 10% discount to the store & more!

We’ve also added unique Loyalty Rewards that you earn through being a Patron, purchasing items on the RIFT Store, using REX, and for special in-game activities – there are 5 tiers to unlock filled with cool items not available anywhere else!

Scott Hartsman on RIFT and other Trion games
http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/08/23 ... the-woods/
Free-to-play has propelled RIFT into an entirely new tier of operation. While he couldn't give numbers, Hartsman said the game is making "vastly" more money than before and has the largest monthly player population it's ever had.

He wanted to clarify that he isn't for or against free-to-play; for him, it's all about finding the right fit for the right model. Hartsman said that for a game to go F2P, the audience has to be interested in it, the game has to be modified to work with it just right, and there need to be enough resources to do it. He praised the decisions that the RIFT team made with this F2P model, saying that Trion chose absolutely right in ensuring that players felt good about what they bought instead of buying to alleviate pain.

"I would say that RIFT is the most successful F2P conversion that's ever been done because the team went deep and thoughtful about the best way to do that," he said.

What the future holds for RIFT is still a mystery -- Hartsman wouldn't spill details of the roadmap -- but he's certain that it will thrill fans of the game.
