No MMOs for me here - just don't have the time around work/family. Still gaming and in touch with a bunch of EQ people though.

I've found that all of the things that made EQ great back in the day can be found in Eve.

Death Matters - You feel the sting when you get blown up
Older Player base - I think the average age for a player is in the 30's
It's not easy - Incompetent or super jerky players are weeded out and don't make it very far
Travel - It takes time to get places which makes the world (or Universe) feel really big without being too punishing
Time to chat - You don't have to button mash abilities so there is plenty of time to get to know people
Community - You know who people are, even in rival Corps and Alliances (Space Guilds)
Politics - There are real and lasting consequences in how different Alliances interact with each other

I have played a ton of MMO's but always loose interest after a year or two. When I got into Eve it made me realize that all the new MMOs were missing the items above. At its core Eve is basically just Everquest in space. I finally found a modern game that followed the same model which kept me playing EQ for almost 10 years. You do have to make it past the learning curve of doom though.

Enough of my rambling.

My problem with Eve was basically that, according to my friend to has played Eve since it came out, that the tutorial BLOWS. Everything it has you learn is not how you actually do things in the game. The equivalent example he told me is that if you made a similar tutorial in a fantasy based MMO, it would try to teach you how to walk and open a door before you could go out and do anything. Just learning how to move the ship and dock the ship was a complicated process that was exceedingly frustrating. I have no issue when complicated things are supposed to be complicated......but for F's sake why isn't there an auto-docking mechanism? Would a space station really trust everyone to manually dock their ships? And if there is an auto-dock.......WTF didn't the tutorial teach it to me that way?

I really did want to like the game.....but the tutorial just turned me completely off.

Getting into the game is the largest hurdle. I tried it for the first time, thought it was stupid that I could not manually pilot my ship, and put it down for 2 years before a friend had me try it again. Funny thing, they made it so that you can manually pilot now but I have never done it. With the latest patch they scraped the entire tutorial system and replaced it with something new called Opportunities. I have no idea how it stacks up with the old system though.

Eve had a huge influx of players after the "This is Eve" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdfFnTt2UT0) trailer was released and CCP has been working to improve the "new player experience". Hopefully they get it right.

yeah, the learning curve is a bitch. they've updated the tutorial and all that stuff in the past year or so though, its a bit easier to understand now.

in EVE i am Tommy Gold in Dodixie, and Gloria Stepanesku in Amarr. i pretty much just hang out in the hubs, so that's where u'll find me.

it actually is quite simple to move. u click in a direction and the ship flies in that direction. and there is no manual docking. all docking is always automatic :P . u click the station, and click the dock button, and ur ship automatically docks.
