I thought the same thing about DVR, until I got one. Now I can't watch tv at all without it.

Well I know myself and I've been around that technology before with friends who have it. They haven't felt a need for the internet on their phones and they can use it.

As an example for myself: I can text, but I've never cared to use it and some people swear by it. My old phone years ago had voice mail, and we all know answering machines... my current phone does not have voice mail and I really don't find myself missing the technology.

There is one thing I would like for mobile phones to do but the infrastructure for it doesn't exist in the United States--act as a form of payment. It'd be great if I could hit a few keys and use my phone to securely make a payment at checkouts, ticket kiosks, and vending machines.

Wouldn't it just be more fun to use the table to talk to your credit card?

I think i'm going to hold out a little longer for the technology to mature a bit more.

Right now I can get a fine basic cell phone for free from my wireless company and a fine basic MP3 player for 50 to 100 bucks at the local gadget shop. I'm not particularly inclined to pay an extra 50 bucks a month surf the internet on a tiny screen. That's not to put the iPhone down. I certainly would accept one if it was given to me as a gift.

Eventually the price of the gadgets will come down. You can already get a Treo or Blackjack for about $100 with contract. Just a few years ago a gadget like that would have cost $500. The price for wireless bandwidth is also going down. I expect that in 3 years I will be able to pick up a smart phone that does pretty much everything the iPhone does for about $100, and only pay 20 bucks a month extra for the bandwidth.

It's a beautiful toy, and i wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers. I just don't feel like paying the early adopter premium on this one.

Yeah I saw that. It's kind of neat, but probably a little hard to integrate into a vending machine.

It uses WiFi... so no not really. The hard part is market acceptance that the credit cards will be safe and secure.

Shopping online is orders of magnitude safer than handing your credit card to a store clerk.

Haha good luck telling them that. They're too paranoid to hear sense.

Weak, I just found out that it was Cingular/ATT only. I'm a Verizon guy so I guess I'll have to settle for that Prada thing... except that sounds like such a bitch name. I don't know if my ego will allow me to own a device with such a name.

Well, there's the whole Cingular/ATT thing too I guess - I'd never use them again after having their customer service flat out tell me I was lying when calling in a fault on two different occasions.

Hi, my phone is doing this.
No sir, your phone is not doing that.
wtf...

I got that with Alienware, and I gave them a WTF over the phone. Damn CS outside an English speaking country *shakes fist*

I've never had trouble with Cingular, did they at least speak the English, Dd?

British and Australian = sexiest forms of English.
Texan and redneck = bottom of the barrel.

Then obviously you have never listened to a true Texan. Granted there aren't many left these days.

Well maybe if you only talk to uneducated rednecks. I think southern intellectuals have the most charming voices in the US, but Brits are my favorite overall.

Oh no, there is a difference between a southern accent and a redneck accent. As you said, uneducated are the rednecks and the intellectuals are southern. I've been at school in Georgia long enough to drop a few northern prejudices :P

Edit: Woah, way off topic. Is there any upcoming competition to the iphone? The Chocolate was kinda but it's old news now.

has anyone heard of the "ocean" by helio or used it. From what ive seen on the site, its much like a variation of the EnV by verizon and the sidekick from team mobile.
