Re: The Hobbit
I am even more skeptical now since there is going to be 3 movies than I was back when there was only going to be 2. My understanding on source material is they only have the rights to tell the story contained in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They do not have the rights to The Silmarillian or any other Tolkien works.

Re: The Hobbit
You know, I'm not sure how they've worked out the rights issues. I know the family owns the rights to the Silmarillion, but there are other works that might fall under a different "umbrella" so to say.
Just the story up to the destruction of Smaug is quite a bit, but the story doesn't end there. We also have the Battle of the Five Armies, so much can be set up there.

Re: The Hobbit
Smaug is my favorite part of The Hobbit, it sucks I'll probably have to wait a couple years to see him on the big screen.
Hopefully no shootings at the midnight release for this blockbuster tomorrow...

Re: The Hobbit
Movie #2, Tax! I believe the 2nd film is called, "The Desolation of Smaug." So, I imagine it will be super Smaug heavy which is why I'm actually excited for 3 films. No glossing over the dragon. Period. I felt like they glossed over some stuff in Return of the Kings. That was my only huge complaint with the films, they did not do Eowyn justice in her final battle against the Witch king (the passage in the book still gives me chills), nor did they go into Eowyn and Faramir's coming together at the end. Boo.
They can spend film 3 on the 5-armies and aftermath. I actually think it will balance out nicely. Probably have some bloat in the beginning of film #1 in the shire (which is how Fellowship went as well). 15-20 minutes about hobbits and eating and dining and Frodo and Bilbo. Then boom! Adventure time.
Edit: Yep! Got the title correct...

Re: The Hobbit
Well they blew the hole Dernhelm angle which is why they didn't spend much time on Eowyn's fight. But in the Director's cut there was some stuff about her and Faramir as I recall.

Re: The Hobbit
I never actually read the Hobbit. I only read the LotR series after initial movie came out. While I fully respect Tolkien and the stories he has put together, I absolutely detested his writing style. I haven't tried to read any of them in years so my tastes may have changed, but I can't bring myself to read his writing.
I'll be interested to see how this trilogy turns out. I might see it with the girlfriend sometime next week. I'll probably be the only one in the theater who has no idea how it turns out.

Re: The Hobbit
I read LotR first as well, but went on to The Hobbit and then tried the Silmarillion but in Year 9 that got a little heavy...

Re: The Hobbit
I remember starting the Silmarillion and making it ~10 pages in before I started fast forwarding and eventually put it down forever. Boring.
I remember watching this movie so many times growing up with my sister. I was going to try to watch it again before this live action Hobbit but oh well!

My aunt had us watch that over and over again growing up. I still can hear some of the songs.

From the sequel, but the only song I could remember from the animated movies.

I was sitting there at my desk this morning plotting how to cut out early and go see the Hobbit, but with this big tragedy, I think I'll wait a couple days and see this movie when our heads are screwed on straight.

I usually fall in line with Roeper on most movies so this does not bode well for my full enjoyment. But we will see tomorrow.

Re: The Hobbit
Just saw it.
I'm into simple gags (aka any time a dwarf or small person is onscreen). So basically, best movie ever.

Re: The Hobbit
I enjoyed it, but its no comparison ( in my mind ) to the lotr movies. Of course to be fair that is a more epic storyline. Its always awesome to see Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond after so long, but I thought the old animated movie followed the book better from what i recall and the troll king was really like the gungans of the franchise. Didn't like that part at all.

Re: The Hobbit
I generally liked it, I'd say 7/10. It wasn't on the scale of the LOTR movies and really felt more like another episode of the series if it were a television show. It seemed more catered for children, which I'm fine with, I just wasn't expecting it.

Will see it in a few days. It will be top heavy. I think that much I can guess. Time in the shire, time building things up. The real action, imho, will take place in movies 2 and 3.
