It's not like FDR was the "family values" candidate either, though he did deal with a Congress unwilling to move the country along.......so he threatened to just do it himself with his power as President. And let's not forget which party gave us the current filibuster problems in the Senate, if we were still under the old rules it would make things much simpler.

Murphy's law in action. The system allows for gridlock and so it's happening. Seems like there should be some mechanism in place that doesn't allow the government to come to a stand-still. I don't think the founding fathers ever foresaw the complete polarization of ideology that we are seeing today. The system needs to be robust enough to account for that. Currently it is not.

See, they should've had software architects design the Constitution. Good software pays more attention to the exceptions than the rules ;)

Gridlock was not a new idea for the Founders. Look how long it took to ratify the Constitution in the first place.

The only good thing that came from analfroth's re-election in 2000 was that I got to vote against him for the Senate twice.

I really should understand by now that there is no maturity to be found in the Political section at all...

Santorum has lost any respect to which he may have been due.

I'm fully aware that I'm guilty of it as well on occasion.

Seriously though, "analfroth"? Pretty sure that's a new low for this board.

Don't be silly, there is no "new low" here to be had. We can't go any lower, we've already dug to China....well more accurately, somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

There was a point in American history where the two sides on the debate locked up, became ideologically rigid, refused to compromise, and everything went kerthunk. It culminated in the 1859 Democratic primary, which split the Democratic Party into the nutjobs and the 'can't we all just get along?' faction, and gave the 1860 election to Lincoln.

Well... seems Gingrich is doing better in the polls than anyone imagined, much to the joy of the Obama admin and the chagrin of the Republican establishment. If newt gets the nomination, he'll hand Obama an easy second term. He almost guarantees that most of the moderate swing vote will either vote for Obama again, or stay home.

If he gets the nod, I just can't bring myself to vote for him. Don't trust him, I thinkn he's a loon, and he gives me the sense he'd rather be emporer than president.

You think Newt is a loon, but have claimed in the past you'd vote for Ron Paul? Somehow Paul is not a loon?

Before he dropped out, Huntsman seemed like a better candidate than all these guys. It's really too bad Ron Paul has more crazy, extreme positions than sensible ones, because he would make an interesting candidate. I've liked some of the things he's put out there.

If Romney decides that he can't beat Obama this election, he'll throw the nomination to Newt and run in 2016 against (probably) Hillary, as her charm and good looks may have faded a little by then.

Huntman and Santorum have been the best two candidates, imo.

Well, that's an incredibly low bar to clear.

Sure, Huntsman believed in science and evolution... but he was also pushing the same failed economic agenda that Republicans have been pushing for decades, including a tax plan that would have increased taxes for the poor and middle class while drastically cutting taxes for the wealthy. The exact wrong direction we need to be heading.

Was he a "better candidate" than the rest of the field? Maybe, but he was still horrible.
