I heard a rumor that there's a football team named the Cardinals, but nobody in Arizona can confirm or deny that.

130 of those are actually Electors in the College

Those 130 are called the Conclave when they are in the process of electing a new pope....

The choice for Pope is supposed to be inspired by God....but who knows what goes on once the door closes...........

Actually only 120 of them vote. Thats sort of a new rule that JP2 instituted I believe. And they meet in conclave, they are not called The Conclave.

The wealth of misinformation on this thread is mind boggling.

Interesting to note that John Paul appointed 117 of the 120 Cardinals who will be voting on the succession.
Correction Mr. President, I DID build this, and please give Lurker a hug, we wouldn't want to damage his self-esteem.

The other three were already taken out and buried with Jimmy Hoffa.

This pope was for lots of free aid for the poor, against the death penalty and against the wars in Iraq.

Not fully a conservative.

The selection of an elder man as Pope is generally very deliberate, and not only because of the old saws about age and wisdom, and etc. - Popes aren't ever up for re-election, amoung other things.

Also, Aabe, 'conservative' within the Catholic Church and within the American government are the same word applied to different concepts. The positions that you've stated are highly consistent with 'conservative' Catholiscm, which includes, amoung many other postions, that Human life is Sacred. You'll note that the pope was also anti-abortion, and generally, anti-euthanasia. This is consistancy, and stems from a single very important sentence: Thou Shalt Not Kill. On 'free aid to the poor', please note that personal charity is considered a cardinal virtue in Christianity: From those that can, to those that need. This concept permeates western religion. To adhere to it is not particularly 'liberal', nor 'conservative'. However, on many, many stances, John Paul II was extremely conservative on issues such as the role of women in the church, the condemnation of homosexuality, etc.

I expected better from you Harlowe. Why all the hatin' on a man that wanted nothing more than human rights, protection of the innocent and basic human dignity?

Actually I'm deeply bothered that one of the cardinals officiating the Pope's funeral is Cardinal "Pedophile Protector" Law... I'm like, wtf?

JP2 was absolutely a conservative pope - in the sense "conservative" applies to Catholicism.

My biggest criticism of Catholicism is their stance on birth control - something I seriously question as biblical in any sense and even morally questionable. JP2 enforced and strengthened that stance - as you'd expect a conservative Catholic to do.

Sorry I misspelled it. It is Onan on Onin. Here is the biblial text from Genesis 38 of the KJB:
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. 5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him. 6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. 7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him. 8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. 9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. 10 And the thing which he did displeased [1] the Lord: wherefore he slew him also.
