I saw Richard Simmons at the New Orleans airport 10 years ago or so. I asked a co-worker "Did richard simmons just walk by us?" and he did a double take, walked up to us and said "yep, you just saw me". Uh, awkward. The man is more of a nutcase in person than he is on TV. You'd think people would be trying to chat him up or ask for autographs. Nope, he pretty much scared away the whole terminal. Nobody wanted anything to do with him.

I like to try to get people to recognize me as a human being, rather than a mobile fleshy obstacle to their next smoke break.
Besides, people have interesting lives. Asking for a little insight into them through smalltalk can be enlightening, happy, or humbling.
