It was never about ALL females or all males. Not all of them are sluts (male or female). The stigma is not the same because women are much more sexually free than they were a generation ago.

I will never understand why sexual activity is considered anymore reprehensible than any other thing we do for pleasure. Our society drinks and smokes and drives too fast. We sit in front of our video games for hours, stuff our faces full of food, etc, etc, etc. All of those things have consequences socially, physically, emotionally, and financially. Why is sex any different if all parties involved are consensual, of age, and as safe as possible while doing it?

Because sex is necessarily an act between two people, which means there's a much higher potential of jealousy being involved. Add to that the basic biological urge to mate and form a family group and you have a great recipe for more social stigma than you could ever want.

Actually Wende I disagree that jealous can't or doesn't occur in casual relationships, however it's most often the result of one partner "wanting more" while the other was just looking for a good time. If you're fucking someone you have a relationship with them albeit maybe it's just a short one. Relationships are funny things and they're like people, they come in all sizes, varieties, colors and they all have different aspects. Just because you don't consider yourself to be in a relationship with someone doesn't mean they feel the same. I can specifically recall a one night stand where the next day the guy asked for my number and I told him I wasn't interested in anything more. He got furious ranting and raving and talking about stupid bitches who just like to use people and toss them aside.... we met in a bar for gods sake, I assumed it was obvious I wasn't going to be building a relationship with the guy, but apparently he was under a different impression.

From a fundamental biological standpoint, the impulse exists to do more than "fuck to fuck". Maybe you can suppress it - hell if I know cause I'm not you, but you can't tell me that it's always suppressed in the guy or girl you fuck. That's the point - the base animal instinct with sex is *always* to do more than just copulate.

Like I said, the reason sex is singled out is simply because it's necessarily a multi-person exercise where there's pretty damn powerful biological instincts in play. You may rationalize away from it (that's fine), but the answer to the question of why sex is treated differently is really pretty obvious when you stop and think just a little about biology.

Don't get me wrong - I don't see any real issue with people fucking other people for their own amusement. I may not choose that for myself, but it's not exactly my call to approve or disapprove of other people if they aren't hurting anyone. I'm just saying there are reasons people get all weird about sex as opposed to other things.

The fact that almost all societies would censor a nude sex scene between a loving, married couple as far more "child unfriendly" than someone murdering another person says a hell of a lot about how screwed up people actually do get.

I live in a very progressive area. I know I'm old and all, because clearly being 32 makes me old according to Harlowe, but I don't think I'm that far out of touch. I also have teen aged daughters, so I would assume that for all of my out of touchness they'd be well in touch with how young people think. Nothing has changed. It's more accepted that women will have multiple sex partners but the fact remains, if a guy sleeps with 20 women, boys will be boys. If a girl sleeps with 20 guys, she's a slut. In fact, I think a guy could get away with sleeping with 50+ women and few people would bat an eye. Especially if those women were all attractive. He'd be a stud. A girl can't sleep with 10 without being labled easy.

I just see it all around me in the 20-something crowd. I don't really see girls getting labeled "slut" unless they had a nasty break-up over the girl cheating. But otherwise, a person's sexuality really doesn't seem to be a big deal.
