Despite a demanding sign-up process the initial numbers bodes very well for the future of the most savage, sexy and action-packed MMO ever created.
Hahaha.

Going to be interesting to see how they enforce their Mature rating.

Gamespot preview, 07/02
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/gamespace ... ot;title;2
Funcom stated at the outset that the game would be designed around an ESRB rating of "M" for mature content, and there's no question the game will live up to the rating, especially since it also has dramatic killing blows that occur randomly based on your character's skill in combat.

Dramatic killing blows include goring enemies on your sword or decapitating them, and result in a temporary blood-splatter effect on your screen.

I'm sticking with XP for now

people are trying to get DX10 to work on XP
http://www.technospot.net/blogs/downloa ... y-project/

both Shadowrun and Halo2 are "Vista only" games but they dont require DX10 and have been hacked to work with XP

I do want to try AOC without any "hacked fix" - so will eventually buy Vista

It will run perfectly fine in Windows XP under DirectX 9

You do need Windows Vista to run it in DirectX 10, along with a DirectX 10 card such as the NVidia GeForce 8000 series or the ATI HD 2900 series.

Dd has the biggest fucking MS hardon ever. Fuck that man... IF someone figures a way to make DX10 work with XP why the fuck wouldn't that be ok? DX10 is the ONLY reason I have Vista on a machine in my house. If they can fix that MS can shove the rest of Vista right up their ass.

OK, that makes more sense. I knew they were supporting DX10 for a long time, I just was not aware they had both a DX10 and DX9 pipeline.

I've got no problems with someone trying... I'm just saying it's a lot more work than translating DX10 to DX9 or OpenGL calls - especially as DX10 games become more prevalent and people start actually using the full breadth of the API rather than just treating it like DX9++.

I do think it would be stupid of MS to put the work into supporting it on XP though - there's no good reason for them to, and expecting them to do so makes no sense at all.

To be honest, those screenshots look more like the difference between DX7 and DX9. I can't say I'm all that impressed.

I don't think we'll truly see the capabilities of DX10 until someone writes a game engine from the ground up to use it and not make the engine backward compatible with DX9. And by "someone" I mean the Unreal team, the Half Life team or Id.

I did see a short DX10 video on the Nvidia website some time back that showed some kind of gaseous effect inside a glass container that got me all hot and bothered, so I know the potential is there.

E3 Preview from MMORPG.com
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setv ... gameID/191
<snippet>
Unlike many games' point, acquire target and click for auto-combat, the enemy closest to your character is targeted.

There are six different moves that you can employ and some arcing moves can also strike other opponents if they are close enough to you. The UI is sparse, but in the middle is a radial indicator which shows where your swing will land. If there is more than one mob in that arc, you will injure all of them. If there are none in range, you will just be flailing through thin air with your weapon. Like real combat, some moves naturally lead to others and players can string them together in combinations, to devastating effect.

Magic is used in much the same manner. Depending on the spell in question and its area of effect, you may injure more than one opponent with it. Having this sort of control in combat means that combat is involving and immersive. You have to pay attention. If you are the type of gamer that likes to have your Cheetos in one hand and your coffee in the other while your character auto-attacks mobs, licking your fingers every now and again to hit that flashing special attack button, this game is not for you.
...
Age of Conan will be launched in both a DX9 and DX10 version of the graphics engine.

The Xbox Live version will be in DX9 in 2008, and their wish for it, is for the technology to be able to support hybrid servers by then, so that players on both the PC as well as the Xbox Live version can commingle in the same world.

It would be cool if Age of Conan, Warhammer, and the WoW expansion all launched on the same day. Well, ok, maybe Warhammer can launch the week before, but only because I have a vested interest and then I could take a week off to play WoW. :)
