Monitor Question

Post by Select »

I bought a gorgeous 19 inch Viewsonic about a week ago. I took it home and there was a dead pixel smack in the center. I went back and exchanged it for another one (had to go to two stores since one was out of stock) They hooked this new one up in the store, behind the customer service counter so I could see. I thought everything looked okay, but I guess I was too far away. When I took it home, and got a closer look, this one also had a dead pixel in another part of the center.

After talking to a coworker they said this second one sounds like a stuck pixel. The first monitor had a perpetually white pixel. This new one has a red, sometimes yellow pixel against a black background. It becomes white when I drag a light gray or white window over the area.

The coworker said to fix the pixel, I just need to press a slightly wet cloth or napkin over it for like 20 seconds.

Is this just a stuck pixel and should I do the napkin thingy?
I would like to be saved a pain in the ass trip if possible, but I don't want to fuck the monitor up.

The napkin thing won't hurt it, but I wouldn't tell them you did it either if it doesn't fix it.

I'll also say that dead pixels are pretty damn common these days. And I'll also say that getting your money back / exchange is probably pretty lucky. I know of at least 3 major manufacturers that won't exchange or refund for less than 3. Which in my mind is complete bullshit. If you buy something new and it has ANYTHING wrong with it you should have the right to get a new one. Another reason I thought that whole "replace it with a refurbished" one was a horseshit policy.

Normally I wouldn't give a shit about one dead pixel, but it's smack in the middle. It makes a pesky little focal point, no matter what I'm doing.

I didn't buy it directly from the manufacturer, but from a store. The store has done the exchange, which may be why I've been so lucky.

The trick worked. What a nifty little thing.
It took a few tries of pressing against the pixel and I had to rub it a little, but success! No sign of a stuck pixel whatsoever.

For the dumbasses that may try this, please be aware that the wet napkin will drip water down from where you're pressing.

That and it would be a good idea to not let the water get into the electronics by seeping into the edges.
