Re: The Hobbit
Cool! Ian Holm is way too old to play a younger Bilbo. I wonder what they'll do about that? The characters that overlap with the trilogy should be fine; Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Hugo Weaving as Elrond. Most of the other characters will be new actors anyway, like Thorin and the dwarves, Beorn and Bard.
BBC radio did a really good audiobook + musical score of this a few years back.

How in the hell are they going to turn a 255pg book into two full length movies? I mean I know they want to milk the cash cow until its teats fall off but damn.

I agree. Are they going to throw in some "Adventures of Tom Bombadill" in there?Kulaf wrote:How in the hell are they going to turn a 255pg book into two full length movies? I mean I know they want to milk the cash cow until its teats fall off but damn.

Newline must have coughed up the cash they tried to screw him out of. They are all sluts willing to work for the big bucks......hell we all are so I certainly can't fault him for that, hehe.

He never signed on before, so I doubt they'll fire him or he'll be quitting. They can't really start doing shit until after the writer's strike so, it might be longer than we think for this to go into production.
I don't care how much they milk out Middle Earth, I just look forward to seeing some visually awesome fantasy flicks.

Yeah, Harlowe, and the LoTR Trilogy has been the best of the bunch in the past five years, by far.

Re: The Hobbit
An interesting thing I read somewhere was that before the film studio decided to do LoTR they spent about 1.5 million trying to bring Isaak Asimov's Foundation Trilogy to the screen. Don't know why it fell though.

Movie studios have run out of ideas......again. Haven't you noticed the perponderance of remakes these last two years?
The rights to Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant were purchased too. Doubt we will see a movie from it any time soon though.

I agree Kulaf. And there's a new Batman. It seems as if the old rule of a trilogy is as far as you can go with a story is done as well. Popular series are going to go five or six deep, i.e. LoTR, Harry Potter, Pirates, Narnia, Shrek, Batman, etc.

Re: The Hobbit
Harry Potter and Narnia were 5 or 6 (or more) deep as the main series. They're not that long for sake of milking it in the movies o.o They were written that long.

Re: The Hobbit
I read somewhere that the second movie will explain what occurs between The Hobbit and Fellowship of the Rings. It might be interesting to see what happens with Gandalf and "the necromancer" (Sauron) and how Gollum went to find his Precious. Don't know what else is out there, though I do think that Jackson did a good job with filling in some things from the other Tolkien material (sans Arwen crap which we could have done without so much of and given more attention to Faramir/Eowyn for instance.)
Iam Holm could do it with make up. Bilbo wasn't exactly a spring chicken if I remember correctly at the beginning of The Hobbit. I'd prefer to see Holm than anyone else, truth be told.
And since McKellen was telling studios that he would refuse to reprise his role unless Jackson was involved, I imagine he's definitely on board now.

Re: The Hobbit
Well, 4 years later!
I'm fuckin excited for this one! The Colbert Report was awesome last week. If you didn't catch it, it was an entire week of interviews with cast and Hobbit-themed stuff (including the set all week). Jackson called Colbert the biggest Tolkien geek he's ever met. His knowledge of all things Tolkien was pretty impressive. There is something really fun about watching someone famous you enjoy, become a huge nerd over something you also love.
So are any of you guys going to the midnight showing?

Re: The Hobbit
Yay! Someone else made a post in entertainment. Where is everyone?
My last post was in 2007 on this topic. Definitely excited. I won't see it in the 48 frame format first, but might see if after I see the lower-frame rate. My folks purchased a new HD television and it really freaks me out. It makes all the shows look like live television and I hear that's similar to what the 48 framerate does as well.
I still want to see it with the higher framerate, but don't want to be distracted the first time around.
If it's anything like what Jackson did with LOTR, I'll be good. I hear a lot of griping on nerd-boards from a handful of (loud) complainers who detest Jackson's adaptation. I always liked it. You can't go "canon" with Tolkien's work. Period. I think Jackson has the closest you'll ever get and it's more of a tribute to the material than a perfect adaptation.

I'm doing the same thing! I don't want to be distracted by the 48 frame rate detail my first go around. I'm not sure where everyone is, election burn out or holiday busy is my guess!

Re: The Hobbit
I hear it's making some people sick to their stomachs (the higher frame rate), but I do want to see what it looks like.
(sigh)
I haven't even seen the first one and I want the second one to be waiting for me. It's like watching a television show on DVD to "catch up" with the network schedule and then having to WAIT each week to see episodes instead of having one RIGHT THERE waiting for you.
