Scratched monitor glass?
So I inherited a pair of 19" CRT monitors, so to speak. One of them has a highly visible scratch in the middle of its screen. It's deep enough to feel texture in the glass so I know it's not just the coating. I normally use a 19" widescreen monitor so it's not a huge priority as it will likely just be a spare, but if it's not excessively costly or a major hassle I'd like to fix it.
Signs aren't looking good on the net at large but I know we have some unusual expertise around these parts. Anyone know of a treatment to buff it out or cover it up?

With the energy you save with LCDs... I think you are honestly best in the long run to just toss it then try to repair financially speaking.

Nothing I know of can fix a scratch you can actually feel. And even if it could be filled in I doubt there wouldn't still be an area of distortion every bit as bad as the scratch.

Doubt it's easily fixable. Your best bet is probably trying to sand it down or something but you'll always notice it.

Thanks that's about what I expected. Like I said my primary monitor is a 19" widescreen LCD so it's not a terribly big deal. It's just that there are some visual quality issues with LCDs that bother me such as limited range of color, frame to frame ghosting even with fast response times, and when looking at moving images I can actually see the damn subpixel dithering pattern.

I have seen products advertised for repairing scratches on eyeglasses. Perhaps something like that would help.
On the other hand. I agree that the monitors are a pig waste of electricity.

No argument there. But I think sometimes the visual quality is worth it. LCD still needs more work.

I actually find modern LCDs clearer (assuming you are using a digital connection and running at the native resolution). Weird.

Sure if you're reading text they're nice and crisp and perfectly square. Get some motion and color involved though and their deficiencies start to show.

Re: Scratched monitor glass?
I recently setup a team fortress lab in the basement for my son and daughter's boyfriend. One box has a 19" CRT that was top of the line about 5 year ago, and the other has a 17" el-cheapo LCD that's recent. Watching them play side-by-side there's no comparison - the LCD looks much much better.
If it were me, I wouldn't even bother fixing it. At my office in Orange we have a pile of 17-19" CRTs that we are having trouble giving away for free. Best we can do is pay a company to haul them away. No sense fixing something that has a street value less than zero, and I doubt it could be properly repaired anyway /shrug.
