What distro(s) of Linux do you like?

Post by Taxious »

I don't remember there being any kind of official thread about this, so here one is. What distro(s) of Linux do you personally like?

I tried, and by tried I mean usually got frustrated right away and went to something else, a couple of different distributions before I landed on Debian. For what I wanted and needed at the time, Debian was perfect and easy. A couple years later, I'm finally wanting to start getting more familiar with Linux again. I'm thinking that instead of just getting another Debian partition going next to WinXP and Vista that I'll try a new distro. A friend of mine swears towards Gentoo so I'm leaning towards that for now. I would like to migrate towards using Linux as my default OS at home but I think this point is a ways off.

Ubuntu is by far the best general purpose home-user distro out there at the moment and it's derived from Debian so you'll probably enjoy that. For work stuff I'd probably look at Red Hat or SuSE, but only because they tend to be better supported by pay-for-help people.

I personally like Gentoo a lot because it taught me a hell of a lot about how the system itself worked, but I don't think I'd recommend it for a desktop box because the emerges to keep stuff up to date would be hell (I use Gentoo for my firewall box which runs headless). Once you've messed with Gentoo a bit, you'll feel dirty for downloading binaries on other distros...

So, if you're looking to be geeky and learn about Linux then give Gentoo a try. If you actually want a useful machine that you don't spend forever rebuilding then I'd suggest Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is very user friendly . But for something thats going to kick your ass and teach you alot, I would have to agree. Gentoo is the ballsack snapper.

Ubuntu is the first distro I did not just dink around with and uninstall. It has lived on my laptop for over a year now. For basic web surfing and document editing it works absolutely fine.

My gaming machine tho is still a windows desktop.

Ubuntu, although Sabayon (derived from Gentoo) is pretty cool.

Using Xubuntu for my Server, and Ubuntu for my regular machines.

Well, I finally got my 8800GT to work correctly with compiz. Call me cheap, but I really like some of these effects!

Hell, I'll be happy when the day comes where I can use the Compiz effects, 3D acceleration, OpenGL, and World of Warcraft on an ATI graphics card, all at the same time.
