Just to copy Callegh (router problem)

Post by Garrdor »

Ok -

So I've had this problem. I have a Belkin 2.4ghz 802.11g router - and I can't get the fakkin thing to work. It's wireless, but It has 4 ports in the back.

I just upgraded from Gaywire (Clearwire) to Charter. I'm pretty tech stupid - as some of you may know. The 'cable guy' came out and hooked the modem up and it instantly started running some installation/registration BS. I set up my 'account' through Charter and schtuff. He asked me 'how many machines are you using?' - I told him 1. So - it's all set up and he leaves. I get a surprise sum of money that I dump into getting my own machine so I can WoW with my fiancee. I'm like "oh NP. I have a router I spent like $70 on a year ago." I can't get that shit to work. I've accessed the router and it says "not connected"... okkk.

I've tried cloning the "MAC address". I've searched many help sites and I can't find anything helpful/useful.

One thing I found peculiar is when I plug a straight connection from my modem to my NEW computer (which I didn't have when Charter set my shit up) - I don't get anything. It sees that the connection is there, but - NOTHING Q_Q.

Tyme to get a new router? Anyone have any problems with networking with Charter? Should I call them? Maybe I need to run the "install/registration" on my other machine? (I haven't been able to find it. I've checked the Customer Support portion of the Charter.net site)

IM SUCH A FUCKING NOOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUCK MEEEEEEEEEEEEe

OH SHITTTTTTT I JUST WANNA PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFUCKFUCKFUCK

and - might I add - It doesn't even work with the machine that HAS 'charter installed' on it.

I'm running XP service pack 2.

It's not the router.....it's most likely the proxy information he ran when he originally set it up on your old computer. It might be accessing a RADIUS server or something like that to authenticate you on their network which your new computer doesn't have which is why it still won't work even when you connect it directly. This accounts for why he asked how many machines you wanted to hook up as he would need to program them all. Your router is most likely messing up the working computers ability to connect to the authentication server when you plug your old machine in to it. It is also more than likely tied to the MAC address of the NIC in the original computer. So if you do set up MAC address cloning on the router make sure that is the address you clone.

Bottom line.....call em out and have them set it up for you.

Is it just a router or is it a cable modem/router all in one?

As long as you're using cable modem he installed you won't need to clone any MAC addresses. I had no trouble just plugging the ethernet port on my cable modem into the uplink port on my router and having it just work.

Yeah, I know for Comcast you can reset the modem, then reset the router, and when the router goes to get its IP address, the modem will use the router's mac address. Basically the first mac address that connects to the modem becomes the "official" one, but that's Comcast.

Your best bet is posting the question at broadbandreports.com in the Charter forum. Keep your post as professional as possible, and in all likelyhood you'll have your answer within an hour. Most of the company specific forums have techs posting for that particular company, and even if they don't, you'll get some charter user that knows his bidness.

Ah, the modem I had used it's own MAC address.

Charter is the same way, you have to reset the modem if you connect a different computer than the one originally connected.

If Charter is better than the connection you got rid of, then that company must suck some major balls.
