WoW Broken?
Anyone hear any details on how exactly they fucked up the weekly maintenance so it took almost 6 extra hours for some servers?
I'd like to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my ass.

No details here, but yeah I was mad I didn't get to play all day and my server was in the last group to come back up!

Re: WoW Broken?
It was beyond unreasonable...6+ extra hours for 'routine maintenance' on most of the servers, daily/weekly quest NPCs not working, unable to see your own typing in chat channels, guild chat completely broken, excessive amounts of lag in all major cities, among numerous other problems. Someone's gonna get fucking fired for what was probably no more than a misused '>' or something like that.Fallakin Kuvari wrote:They've been doing this for 5 years and they fucked it up so bad last night its like the game is new again.

Re: WoW Broken?
Yeah I was having a bunch of issues last night after my server was finally back up. What the hell did they (try to) change anyway?
On another note, why do they need to have "weekly maintenance" in the first place??

Server-side patches, restarting, fixing various other things.
This week was majorly mismanaged.

It's just funny to me that they "fix" things weekly yet I could name about 10 things that are broken in-game and I haven't even been playing that long...

Re: WoW Broken?
Some things new players see as broken are actually intentional.Taxious wrote:It's just funny to me that they "fix" things weekly yet I could name about 10 things that are broken in-game and I haven't even been playing that long...
Usually weekly maint. is just to reset raid instances, respawn world bosses, reset weekly quests, etc. Real routine stuff. Someone must have fucked up royally for things to be this bad.

Quests that don't work and pathing issues (especially with pets) are hopefully not intentional...Turaylon Soulshadow wrote:Some things new players see as broken are actually intentional.
They have development servers to test patches on and they (should be) able to reset instances/spawns/quests while the server is still up. It's hard for me to imagine something they would need to change weekly that they would need to take servers down for 4+ hours for.Turaylon Soulshadow wrote:Usually weekly maint. is just to reset raid instances, respawn world bosses, reset weekly quests, etc. Real routine stuff.
Guild Wars is able to slipstream in major updates while you play, I wonder what the hell Blizzard is doing during these down times.

Restarting the servers, server-side patching, etc. Live Hot-fixing of things will only get you so far.
They do have a habit of breaking more things than they fix, though.

Re: WoW Broken?
Last week Saurfang was bugged and was getting WAY too much Blood Power from things he normally doesn't get any from, and there was a bug with the Arthas fight, the most important fight they've supposedly released in the game according to storyline, where you could take some item that I forgot what it was and during the part where the floor breaks apart if you threw it at the floor it didn't fall or something, making the phase much easier.

Re: WoW Broken?
Because they're too slack to write a program that will stay up for more than a week would be my guess. Talking to WoW players over here, it's really annoying to have the servers down every Tuesday at 8pm. As bad as SoE were, none of their games have needed weekly resets.Taxious wrote:On another note, why do they need to have "weekly maintenance" in the first place??

Re: WoW Broken?
It was always pretty obnoxious to have to wait to do daily quests every Tuesday and end up rushing through them to try to make it to a raid on time.Ddrak wrote:Because they're too slack to write a program that will stay up for more than a week would be my guess. Re: WoW Broken?
Yeah, that's some pretty weak software/hardware if they require weekly restarts. I've known of servers that have been up for many years without needing to be restarted. Hell, even the tiny basement server I had running off of comcast was up for almost a year with no problems.

Re: WoW Broken?
One of their biggest problems is their per-server population limits. If their world wasn't so small/boring, they could fit more people on each server, causing them to not need to have over 100 different servers up at all times. Keeping all of those up at all times without restarting has got to be more effort than they are willing to put in because they didn't plan well enough.

Re: WoW Broken?
The Warcraft world is small compared to a game like EQ in terms of actual function. When you were running across the Karanas, you were RUNNING across the Karanas, still having to kill things every once in a while unless you were ZOMGSOWED!!!! and the place was HUGE...it would take literal hours, maybe even days, to explore everything in EQ without any expansions. It took me about 30 minutes to explore all of Outlands, roughly the same for Northrend. In order for each server to not become a crowded clusterfuck in terms of out-of-instance questing, they needed more places to put people.Taxious wrote:lolwut?Turaylon Soulshadow wrote:If their world wasn't so small/boring, they could fit more people on each server

Re: WoW Broken?
Well the size of the world really doesn't have much to do with anything except how big the game is (and if it will fit on your hard drive or not).
I don't know what you are talking about with things being a clusterfuck either. I've leveled a few guys from 1-30+ and hardly seen anyone else. Maybe at max level it's really crowded?
