Homeland
Wow... who knew this was going to rock so hard? I mean I love Damian Lewis, but Claire Danes? She was awesome too. Finally breaking out of that "My So Called Life" role I guess. Anywho, if you didn't watch this do so. I can see this being my favorite new show. Oh yeah & Morena Baccarin is still crazy sexy as always (Though I still mourn her long hair from Firefly)

Looks like it's worth a try, thanks. I'm a huge fan of Damian Lewis from Band of Brothers. He was good in Dreamcatcher too. It looks like a solid cast. Also, IMDB rates it an 8.7 and they're one of the few sites I trust the ratings on.

Re: Homeland
Bah I wish this were on Hulu or Zune, I have to watch it on the intarwebz, but it's worth it! Claire Danes is freakin awesome in it, that was kind of unexpected. It's fun to see her in a meaty role and Morena couldn't be unsexy if she tried. Space prostitute, buzzed hair evil alien...it doesn't matter, she's a gorgeous chick. I do miss her long hair too though. =)
Speaking of Firefly, I just saw Jewel Staite on an episode of Supernatural. I wish she would find a good fit somewhere, I really like her and she hasn't been in a series (that I recall) since Stargate Atlantis - which I loved, but more for Jason Momoa.

Just saying, distributing anything is what gets you in trouble, not to mention the speed blows.

Re: Homeland
Fair enough, my mistake. You're talking about Usenet, right? I'm a little rusty on my internet protocols.
There's a few reasons I would tell people to use Bit Torrent over something else like Usenet:
1. Doesn't it cost money these days to access Usenet? Either way it's past it's heyday. Back in the 90's it was the shit though...
2. Bit Torrent indexes far more content. Something like Usenet you're more at the mercy of whatever people decide to upload. You're stuck hoping the stuff you want is sitting on the mirror server.
3. The performance of Bit Torrent is actually better on average most of the time versus other methods. Though some movie studios try to poison the swarm. There's ways around that, though.
4. You're not as vulnerable with Bit Torrent as people want you to think. Everyone I know is blatent about downloading shitloads of content and always have been, without any issues. I could theoretically get a nasty-gram but I'm not worried about it. If I start getting those notices (which I never have) then I'll just pay for a private VPN service and that argument totally goes away. But in practice it's only the people who seed shitloads of content that draw that bad kind of attention. But let one of those assholes send me a demand letter. I'm cool with that.
5. For most people, Bit Torrent is just going to be a better experience.
6. A torrent is a link and not the content itself. As such, it's far more persistent. Stuff drops off of Usenet as fast as it goes on there. Where a torrent might stick around for years.
Busy day and I just blurted this all out, so sorry if it's incoherent, but I'm up for an official thread where we can argue this stuff. Any knowledge is good knowledge.

Scare tactics work on Minute quite nicely, it seems.
Not sure where you are getting the "torrent speed blows" stuff from either. It's completely based on popularity. Perhaps if you have your connections-per-torrent capped at something low while downloading obscure files the speed will suck, but generally any download will cap my bandwidth out. Hell.. I can still download the 4 gig EverQuest Titanium install CDs within a day with only 10-15 ish people seeding.

Re: Homeland
Cost: There is a cost. It's tiny. I was grandfathered in on my plan & thus pay $5.30 a month for 30 SSL pipes. Keeping me safe, secure, private.
Speeds. I have never used more than 3 pipes & that is only so it will be pulling while it sets par/rar/ect. And having those 3 it has pegged my connection out without fail. Even if you have a seedbox you're not going to et anything near consistent speeds like that. It's hitting 18mbps as we speak. That's forever, always, no slowing down.
Not to mention the number of ISP's that are throttling torrent protocols now. Yet another pain in the ass.
Retention: It's up to like 1100 days now. Which is just fucking nuts.
Security: Is there less risk than most think with torrents? Probably. Is it still way more risky than NNTP? Absolutely. You are actually distributing files. Just about every RIAA or MPAA bust & or investigation you hear about is somewhere along these lines. And when there's a better option that involves considerably less risk, why not?
Ease of use: Shit like SABnzbd, SickBeard, CouchPotato = Sit back and do NOTHING. You come home & whatever the hell you want is already done. You don't have to do any searching or waiting or anything. It's seriously a god damned dream.
And even more reasons, but I'm bored now.
Love the idea of torrents, but in the end NNTP > P2P

Re: Homeland
Recent advances in the Bit Torrent protocol (like magnet links) make it almost totally decentralized. There's no "big target" to go after. They can still go after the individual users but they're losing the PR war with that, and besides, judges are smacking them down left and right with those mass lawsuits.
Also, third party news servers are going away with the new draconian laws in Europe. Some of them are already gone. And if SOPA passes here in the U.S. then expect them to go away here too. And don't think your ISP and others can't see what you are downloading from a news server. True, it's a little harder (i.e. a little more $$$) for Hollywood to find out who's downloading what on Usenet versus Bit Torrent. There are ways for them to snarf your IP addy. For now they choose to focus on Bit Torrent but that is changing. That's why you are little safer; because they choose not to focus on you. Not some magical feature of your internet protocol.
So I don't think Usenet will be left standing after too long, where the decentralized technologies are going to keep chugging along. All SOPA is going to do to the indexers like Pirate Bay is kill their DNS. The sites will still be around, just with a non-US controlled domain. Oh noes, they won't be named .com. How on earth will we find them lol. And the torrents themselves are pretty much un-killable.

Re: Homeland
There are plenty of these that work with torrents too. I personally prefer to search manually as I get picky about size and format. I also like to weed out the extra crap that a lot of people add to the downloads.Minute wrote:Ease of use: Shit like SABnzbd, SickBeard, CouchPotato = Sit back and do NOTHING.
