ahh! Good ole fashioned Board Drama

Post by Alluveal »

It's been a long time since we've had it here, but on a writing board I visit, there was some mega drama that I just had to share. You can go back and read from the start, but it really starts heating up on page 4:

LINK

Lady with the purple font is... well... wtf? She sounds like a fuckin' nutjob.

It just gets better and better. Good popcorn thread.

Note: The topic of the thread is about what you hate in book covers. Then, it turns into a debate about the proper usage of the word "rape." (e.g. "You, dude! Cazic Thule just RAPED your ass!")

Purple chick got herself caught by thinking any backing down is a defeat - that's never a winning position on a message board when you start at an extreme view.

On the other hand, getting butthurt by a "rape" reference or even worse going off because you're "protecting some other victim from the nasty word" is even more stupid. Taking the extreme out of purple chicks arguments makes the rest of the board look like a bunch of sheltered princesses gasping in horror at two dogs fucking.

Only a couple pages in so far... but I actually agree with purple. Context is everything, don't let words hurt you. (of course this is why I get kicked out of gay bars for saying "faggot" too)

The only relevant response I've seen is this:
Toothpaste wrote:Haven't you noticed that by choosing that word people are no longer discussing the subject you wanted them to discuss? Isn't that reason enough to choose your words more carefully?

Ohh okay getting good!
I think I'm going to leave this post now because you've greatly offended me and upset me with what you've just said to me,

I don't get why that Duke person was banned too (the mod's comment at the end led me to believe he was going to be banned too), unless I missed some later posts of his/hers.

If purple wouldn't have turned into a neener-neener, ridiculous child, she would have been the least absurd in the thread. The notion that you'd censor people in a writing forum to protect others from "all the potential offensive words" is absurd.

I know! Purple had some good arguments going and had to get all uppity with her shit.

But, yeah... I wasted a good 15-20 minutes reading that shitstorm. It was quite glorious. And I agree with Ddrak on the "rape," thing. It's kind of "icky," but I'm not gonna chastise someone for saying it. When she originally said it, "real-life photos on fiction book covers complete rape my idea of what those characters look like," it made sense. It was a vivid description there. Good writing, yo!
